Are you talking about a specific anime or anime in general?
My personal take ~ I don't mind 3DCG in anime if you blend it well it your show like BEASTARS or 『宝石の国』
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgwFU0Ertq8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFlw55xZoSE
Make sure you blend 3DCG and 2d well; this requires some co-ordination to get the color shading to be consistent.

I should've written "next to it on the same row," my bad.

Watamote and Oh My Goddess are both slice-of-life shows and funny in their own way, is all. Watamote being infinitely funnier.

Then again, Watamote and Lain both deal with loneliness, so maybe not such a bad fit after all.

Thought I should make a thread for bocchi the rock since I assume people here like kirara shows and might be able to relate to this one.

The show feels in some ways complementary to both Slow Start and Comic Girls, in that each of these shows explores different aspects of shyness. Concretely, while Hana, Kaos, and Bocchi can all be deemed as "shy" it stems from different aspects of their personality and manifests in different ways. Slow-start seems to focus more on anxiety: while Hana is quite capable of interacting friends, she second-guesses herself and allows anxieties to get the best of her. There's a very poignant scene in one of the episodes that stands out where she can't sleep because she's pathologically worried about a loose screw that she found on the floor, and she's concerned it might have been important. Even at the end of the series after she's gotten to know all of her friends well, she knows logically that her friends wouldn't care if she told them her secret, but she can't bring herself to which is probably the most tragic aspect of the show and what makes the ED especially memorable: "mada sukoshi dake sunao ni narenakute... terekusai kara iienai kotoba mo aru kedo..."

Comic girls to me focused on self-confidence: Kaos is capable of becoming talented but she doesn't believe that herself. She's shy like Hana, but whereas Hana readily accepts her new friends, you get the sense that Kaos might not even feel someone like her is worthy of having mangaka friends (certainly she doesn't feel her own creations have any worth, as evidenced by that infamous scene where she answers her career survey with

>If there is any occupation that someone as useless as I am could pursue and that would be of any use to someone out there, I'd like to try, but even after wracking my puny brain, as far as I can tell, I suspect that there is no task currently in this existence in this world that I could accomplish without causing serious trouble. Taking this fact to heart, I will minimize my environmental footprint on this earth, living in as small a corner as possible, so please forgive me for only being able to fill out the first box of this survey.

Bocchi on the other hand feels abit closer to watam

I put off watching it because I wasn't keen on the violence and watching cute girls get killed, but I think for anyone who might feel that way the first ep deals with that about as perfectly as they can. They blow things so far over the top in the initial fight that it's impossible to take serious, and it's a clear indicator that you shouldn't think too hard about it. Besides, it seems like everyone that gets killed has it coming anyway.
The whole thing would fall apart if you thought too much about any of it anyway. It's an interesting concept for sure, it's basically a Yakuza story with maid cafes instead of families. The cafes themselves are like fronts, sending a cut of the profits to the families that these cafes belong to, and getting into it with rival families.
I think the "war" part of the tittle is a bit misleading, you could say there's some small turf war stuff and issues with a rival faction, but it's mostly about a small cafe that gets into trouble with it's new recruits, and how things spiral out of control from there.

Some possible spoilers here:
Early on I found it a bit weird how ep1 ends with our protagonist wanting to run away after learning the true nature of maid cafes and surviving what by all accounts should be a traumatic and terrifying experience, by ep2 she's mostly okay with it and all it takes is a very short pep talk from a stranger to make her want to stick it out. It felt like a bit of a jarring transition. In retrospect I'd wonder how she wouldn't know what maids are really like in this universe, since it's apparently a known thing to a degree in the public, at least by the end of the series anyway.
I guess that's just one of many ".....whatever!" type moments in this, which there's a lot of. I wouldn't really call it lazy writing so much as you just need to suspend your disbelief, since it's a fairly silly concept to start with. That said, it does feel a bit sloppy here and there, and could certainly have been better in a lot of places, but it does seem to get better as things go along. It's like everything ramps up by the end.
One thing I felt could have been done a lot better was the introduction of Zoya in ep3. They dump her entire backstory into the same ep she shows u

>her dependence on her mother
Who she never even knew. What dependence could you have for a person you never even met? A deep-seeded longing for her mother isn't very well-established either.
>it wasn't actually "hypnosis"
She acted hypnotized and not aware of her surroundings, so for all intents and purposes, she was hypnotized.
>the symbolic interpretation of this should be obvious
Yeah, it's the power of love and friendship. This theme conflicts with "becoming your own person" a bit. Sure "she must go out of the tree herself", but she doesn't think to do it on her own. She might as well be swapping her mother for her friends and gay lover.
>But that's what every episode basically was?
The in universe explanation is that Pure Illusion is another dimension that actually exists. This is a misdirection. All of the magical girl, collecting rocks just because stuff was also a needless distraction. A straight forward "here's a neural meguffin, lets use it and see what happens" set-up, would have served better.
>everything that happens in pure illusion must be interpreted through that lens
Unless I'm back in english class and getting a grade, I want to enjoy my stories first, then look at them with an uber-deep, symbolic lens.

I was reminded of Pure Illusion when I came across the works of Neville Goddard. He was in the camp of those who believe that reality can be influenced by thoughts. (This idea is also found in certain magick communities, and is presumably the basis for things like manifestation/law of attraction). The idea that reality is a sort of canvas we all influence (whether we consciously realize it or not), that things change fluidly and regularly without our noticing, and that the gaps are filled in by our collective logic feels like a very direct, literal representation of the idea of pure illusion.

Of course a natural question is to what extent is this true. Putting aside the question of free will for a moment, we have control over our own thoughts and feelings (and this can be strengthened through things like meditation) so it's true in that limited sense. And we can of course influence the world through our actions, and deeply desiring a situation will make you more observant/likely to act so as to establish that situation so it's true in that limited sense. And things like the placebo effect show that mere (unconscious) intention itself is sufficient to effect some change within the realm of your body. I think anything stronger than that is wishful thinking at best, delusional fantasy at worst; but ironically fully committing to that on both a conscious and unconscious level might make it more likely for you to act on things you wouldn't have acted on before.

Why do you think the show was titled "flip flappers." As a reminder, the organization in the show is also called FlipFlap. I've thought about a lot of aspects of the show, but never considered the title, and I'm drawing blanks here.

Just laying out the dictionary definition
>with repeated strokes and noise
>the repeated sound and motion of something loose that is moved by recurrent impulses
I feel the second definition makes some sense here. There's a sense of repetition, periodicity, also a sense of freedom (the imagery of wings is associated). But at the same time that periodic motion is comprised of two parts, the "flip" and the "flap" (akin to the "tick" + "tock" clock imagery we see in the show a few times). And the fact that these two are dual to each other is probably analogous to Papika/Cocona's relationship.

For fun I asked chatgpt to pontificate on possible reasons. Here's what it spat out:

>Wordplay and Fun: The title "Flip Flappers" has a playful and catchy quality to it, which could reflect the whimsical and imaginative nature of the series. It might be intended to draw viewers in with its memorable and unique name.

>Transformation and Change: Throughout the series, the two main characters, Cocona and Papika, often undergo transformations and change appearances when entering different worlds within "Pure Illusion." The term "flip" can imply a sudden change or transformation, and "flap" can suggest movement or travel. This could symbolize the central theme of personal growth, self-discovery, and the ever-changing nature of the girls' adventures.

>Symbolism: The title may also be symbolic of the girls' journey to discover their true selves. "Flip" could symbolize turning one's life around or making important decisions, while "flap" could represent the wings of change and the freedom to explore new possibilities. The series features themes of self-discovery, emotional turbulence, and the transition from childhood to adulthood so the title might symbolize the ups and downs, twists and turns, and constant changes that young people experience during this period of their lives.

>Mystery and Intrigue: The title might be intentionally cryptic, sparking curiosity in potential viewers. It doesn't immediately reveal the premise of the show, encouraging people to explore it to find out more.

>Duality and Contrast: The title "Flip Flappers" could suggest a sense of duality or contrast, which is a recurring theme in the series. Cocona and Papika have contrasting personalities and backgrounds, and they often find themselves in contrasting and surreal worlds within "Pure Illusion." The title may reflect the idea of opposites coming together and complementing each other.
