What's the best anime to watch when you are stuck at home on a rainy day?

there is a thread in here somewhere about watching anime in the rain under an umbrella
>> No. 14104 [Edit]
I think OP meant this as a general recommendations thread, not one meant just to ask just that one question.

Actually I wanted to make one myself for a while but instead of using a 'ask for recommendations' formula I'd go with 'feel free to recommend anything'.

just look up shows you liked on MAL and check the recommendations there
also chartfag's older charts can be fun to peruse and if you're a real noob you can always look at 4chanarchive's old /a/ threads. they only go back to 2008 unfortunately, but its a bit informative to see what other people were in to back then.

On rainy days it is nice to watch cheering anime, something light sol like K-On!, Hidamari, Lucky Star etc. Or other choice is to watch some grimdark anime.

I would like to know more 90s ecchi anime like Burn Up.

Denpa teki na Kanojo
Perfect Blue
Not exactly the main character but in Oniisama e everybody expect for the MC and her osananajimi belongs in a psychiatric ward. Saint Juste might be the biggest headcase in history of anime.

In Arakawa Under the Bridge the sanity of most characters is questionable, not the main character though and it's portrayed in a humorous way. More or less the same goes for Kuuchuu Buranko.

Hamdo from Ima Soko ni Iru Boku and the warden from Rainbow are kinda fun if you like psychos. Both of them are voiced by Ishii Kouji who gets lots of roles like that.

ARIA, YKK, Natsume Yuujinchou, Kino no Tabi, Cowboy Bebop

Have you ever considered that maybe the bike was just as much a character in the show with its own personality and voice rather than Kino hallucinating things?

At least that's the way I interpreted it.

It does raise an interesting point however seeing as no-one else seemed to interact with her motorcycle nor did Hermes really interact with anyone other than Kino (except that dog in the tournament arc).

Maybe Hermes just plays into the whole fantastical world that Kino inhabits and travels around. In any case hermes did make the travels a little more interesting giving Kino a conversational partner letting us understand more about her very introverted personality and thoughts she might otherwise have kept to her self and no expressed openly.

Looks like you've seen the vast majority then. You need to go watch Hyakko ASAP, though, one of my favorite SoL shows. Aside from that there's:

- Sketchbook
- Teekyuu
- Sora no Woto
- Taishou Yakyuu Musume
- Morita-san wa Mukuchi

Not really 4 cute schoolgirls doing cute things but aside from those there's Binbou Shimai Monogatari and I have always seen Galaxy Angel as in this SoL-esque category.
>> No. 16190 [Edit]
>>16183
I've already seen Sora no Woto & Taishou Yakyuu Musume. I really wouldn't consider Sora no Woto a cute girls doing cute things type of anime, or anything else that has a spider tank in it. may as well add in stuff like girls und panzar and strike witches in that case.

aside from forgetting Taishou Yakyuu Musume I also forgot to add One off. Almost added Galaxy Angel but remembered that's much more of a wacky random comedy much like milkyholms with more action sprinkled in. The episodic episodes have covered a variety of genras; Westerns, Soap Operas, High School Romance Comedies, Super Robot Anime, you name it. sure it has cute girls doing cute things (sometimes) but that's not the focus of the show, it's a Gag Series.

I'm aware of Sketchbook and Hyakko but just never got around to watching them for whatever reason. Thanks for the reminder, I should really get to them already.

anyway off to do some downloading, thanks again.

For the majority of the show, that is leaving aside the politico-military drama that slowly creeps in then becomes full blown in the final arc/episodes it was undoubtedly a fantastic SOL with the MCs working in a military outpost in the middle of nowhere in a fantastically contrived post-apocalyptic world full of mystery, culture, and intrigue. It was by and large (simply because the main cast were cute girls/women) a cute girls doing cute military things in a distant out of the way military outpost.

I would certainly rank it amongst the best SOL anime and a must watch if only for the first half and the shenanigans the group get up to and coupled with a great OST and an inspiring finale.

>the politico-military drama that slowly creeps in then becomes full blown in the final arc/episodes
>MCs working in a military outpost in the middle of nowhere in a fantastically contrived post-apocalyptic world full of mystery, culture, and intrigue.
>cute girls doing cute military things in a distant out of the way military outpost.

Thats exactly why I couldn't call it a SOL. An improbably female cast doesn't automatically make something a sol. Pointing out the characters are cute is a bit redundant since almost every anime strives to have marketable cute girls. Typically SOL are every day lives of normal people with little or no overall plot. I don't mean that in a condescending way, it's simply a escapism genre for people not necessarily looking for anything deep/meaningful and who couldn't care less about the plot and who just want to relax and watch something simple and cute. Perfect worlds with perfect people where nothing could ever go wrong. You can't toss Sora no Woto up there with the likes of Yuyushiki, Hidamari Sketch or Ichigo Mashimaro just becuase it ripped off k-on's character designs and had a lot of filler episodes. It's just like calling Gargantia a SOL because it has episodic filler episodes with some cute girls. You can do that with just about any anime.

They weren't filler. Those episodes are the meat and potatoes of the show. The girls' pasts, and the world they live in being explained are at most side things added for the sake of justifying the premise at best. While I will agree with you about those points being the most interesting of the series, they aren't what the series is based around, nor are they strong enough to consider the show's focus.

I wouldn't really agree with that, I see no reason why it should be limited to slice of 'normal' life only. Planetes is a SoL show for the largest part and it's about picking up trash. In space.

If you can call Planetes a slice of life because they don't do anything necessarily meaningful for a good chunk of the show, you can call most anime a slice of life. If you want to get really literal about it you actually could call any anime a 'slice of life' since what you're seeing in any show is in fact a slice out of the main character's life. If Planetes is a slice of life anime then so is the likes of cowboy bebop or space brothers. You guys are being way too liberal with what you think is slice of life and you really can't, if you give it an inch it will take a mile.

Look at harem anime, that's a pretty cut and dry genre. 3+ girls lusting over MC. what if you lowered the bar to 2 girls? then you'd have tons of romance anime and shows with love triangles you'd now have to call harem anime.

I'm with what >>16205 said.

I think there are a few things that make a anime obviously not a slice of life anime (unless part of a dream sequence):
people dying, graphic violence, sex, war, drugs, or a heavy focus on drama/romance/action/mystery or other such genres for multiple episodes.

These things kind of ruin the point of the genre as many pissed off otaku would tell you if the characters in some slice of life show like hidamari got gang raped or dragged into some complex murder mystery. slice of life anime is not the place for any of that stuff.
>> No. 16229 [Edit]
>>16213

I'm too lazy to actually argue about that but
>people dying, graphic violence, sex, war, drugs, or a heavy focus on drama/romance/action/mystery or other such genres for multiple episodes.
Planetes has none of that and that was exactly my point. If you ignore 4-6 last eps (which I suggested in my previous post) it's Nothing happens: the anime.
Personally, I think it's you who try to misuse the term by trying to only limit it to completely unrealistic 4 cute girls doing absolutely nothing but cute things series. It might be a slice of some utopian life but the slice couldn't possibly get any thinner - you don't really see them in 'normal' situations, experiencing 'normal' emotions and 'normal' life. All you see in 'incredible awesomeness'.

>If you ignore
If you have to say 'If you ignore...' or 'leaving aside...' it's not a slice of life anime. Again you can do that for just about any anime.
One could say bible black is a slice of life anime if you ignore the sex and violence. leaving aside all the cyberpunk action ghost in the shell is a slice of life anime. Any harem anime can be called a slice of life anime if you leave aside the harem part.

>misuse the term by trying to only limit it to completely unrealistic 4 cute girls doing absolutely nothing but cute things series.
That's what genres are for. You wouldn't say I was misusing the term if I unrealistically limited 'mecha' to only anime with mecha, would you? or if I claimed that a yuri or yaoi anime wasn't a so if characters turned out to be heterosexual? genres are supposed to be limiting, they're like tags on a imagebooru and become increasingly redundant the more vague they get. you label something like Planets as a sci fi anime so people looking for a scifi will find it easily. you don't label something a ecchi anime just because it might have a pantie shot in one or two ep, or harem anime if it has a love triangle. if you're not going to be specific there's not point to having genres or sub-genres in the first place.

I'm getting the impression here you think 'slice of life' is some catch all term for anything with some episodic content between plot focused episodes. episodes that are separate from the main story and could be cut out without getting lost in the over all story ie filler episodes. these type of episodes can be found in just about any anime and their inclusion does not make something a 'slice of life' anymore than you would call smile precure a mecha anime just becuase one out of the 48 ep featured a mecha battle.

Slice of life doesn't mean 'doing jack shit for half the show' and ignoring most of that jack shit is actuality exposition for the over all story in the case of Planets. The term isn't some trashcan for you to toss in whatever you find boring. and who said it was limited to 4 cute girls? Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou is a slice of life anime and it's centered around boys.

I enjoyed Aiura to some extent, but the short episode length always left it feeling lacking. It seemed like it didn't make use of the time very well. I would say slice of life anime doesn't work well in in this format becuase it's over before had a chance to settle in but I didn't have this problem with Morita-san. Even yama no susume felt very fulfilling for it's short run time. Aiura comes off feeling like an average slice of life anime that gets abruptly cut off after the first two minutes.

fireball I'm finding kind of so-so. lot of the humor goes right over my head sometimes, and there's not much else to the show. I almost want to call it boring, since it's just two robots in a large empty room discussing a random topic for a minute at a time. really has me curious why it's so popular. only seen a few ep so far though, which it might be a bit bland I'll still see it through to the end.

Clannad and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien is too much mopping around, I want dying declarations of love not some guy being depressed alone in an apartment, it started to get somewhere at the end of Clannad AS but then it was over in an episode or two.

I think Ill try Koi kaze next.

sorry I thought it was obvious/self explanatory.

Basically something that is a squeal, prequel, spinoff, or part of something else be it manga VN or tv anime. Something that isn't tied to another form of media. Good examples of movies that aren't media tie-ins are ghibli films, and the majority of American made live action movies. I have little interest in watching a movie that will just end by telling me to read the manga for the rest of the story.
