Hello. This is going to be a jazz thread. Since this is a nice, slow board and I have a not so nice, slow connection, I will start by uploading one album a day. I will start by posting what could be considered 'essential' albums, and will go from there. Hopefully it will introduce some new fans to the genre.
So.. how about nu jazz...? It's the only kind of jazz I can get into.
I never really paid any attention to jazz and this thread has helped me to find some nice energetic jazz that I like quite a bit, thank you very much! So far I like David Brubeck and Stanton Moore a lot.

METAL THREAD BECAUSE THERE ISN'T ONE This one is Underwatermoon by an artist called Winterhorde, who call themselves 'Melodic Extreme Metal' which is about right because i've never heard anything quite like them. The whole album is absolutely fantastic, its easily one of my favorites. http://www.mediafire.com/?k1tk7u8ese8t5ax

This is the story of Milunka Savić that inspired our song Lady of the Dark. Milunka Savić was a Serbian woman who took her brother’s place in the army. Partly disguised as a man, she would eventually be among the most decorated soldiers of WW1. https://youtu.be/3AsRfcrZeUE?t=194
Daft Punk thread
Daft Punk remixed by Daft Punk. I still do like that moody futuristic digital thingy thing, yeah. It's good to listen in from time to time.
i got this rare Steam Machine remix by Valentindirekt
So nice.
RIP DAFT PUNK
I know, cliche, but I looked and don't think this thread has been created yet. It might have been on the old tohno-chan but I don't remember. So, What is your favourite song, or songs if you can't choose just one? I realize this type of thing changes over time but I think it would be interesting to share our current favourites... Mine is, the very appropriately named, John Coltrane version of 'My Favorite Things'. I don't listen to it as often as I should but when I do I'm always blown away, I have to stop whatever it is that I'm doing, listen, and let myself get lost in the music... It's the only piece of music I find to be so powerful. The song was too big to post, so here is the youtube videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQsvMf8X0FY (1/2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qt9iLDmaQwk (2/2)
I guess mine would be Porcupine Tree - Time Flies. It's too big to post here, so I'll post the less interesting "Your Unpleasant Family" instead.
Probably this one: HORSE the band - The Black Hole I think I reached enlightenment when I saw it performed live. The mp3 was barely too large to upload.
Pretty much any Alphazone song, but this one is their most inventive, and just the most awesome. Their remix of "Nish - Sagittarius" is what got me into making trance music in the first place. Why did they have to disappear? ;_________;
I can go on, literally forever, about this song. It's the perfect song for me. I can't comment on the music or anything. All I can really say is that NG really outdid themselves with this one. On the studio recording, it's like all of the variables were perfectly aligned, and this song was the result. It captures every beautiful, sentimental feeling I've felt in it's melodies. This is the song that made Number Girl my favorite band of all time. I chose to post a live version, rather than the studio version, because Mukai pulls out an awesome solo towards the end in this one.
can you recommend me good visual kei music to listen to, please? I know and only listen about MALICE MIZER and some other musics I forgot, thank you guuys to guide me to the wonderful world of visual kei
"Japanese music" is too broad, so here's a thread for doujin music. I think Yura Hatsuki is my favorite artist. It's not subtle in the slightest, but it's catchy and addictive. Does anybody here understands music theory? When I was little I used to play the violin, but I stopped around 11 years old. I am thinking of learning how to play some instrument again, it sounds really fun. The thing is I can't remember much about music theory at all. There is also this dread inside me, that learning about music theory could "rationalize" music and make it less enjoyable. Like how some people lose enjoyment in doing things after studying about it. Like art school students. Is this irrational? Moreover, let this be the music theory thread, that we converse about it and teach one another.
>>2829 I think to play you only need to know enough music theory to read the notation? Beyond that it's just stuff trying to formalize a framework to understand music that you'll never use in practice anyway. Like different temperaments, scales, etc. But I can't play anything, so take with a grain of salt.
I learned a bit of music theory while taking piano lessons. What you need to know boils down to notation, note division, time signatures, and a few Italian words. >Is this irrational? Yes. You will not be able to systematically compose anything worthwhile with just the above information.
>The thing is I can't remember much about music theory at all. Hi anon. Just learn the scales (begin with the chromatic one to learn all the notes a piano -- and most instruments too -- has and then learn the major and minor scales so you can play most songs), chords (this is useful for playing modern music because most is mostly based on chords, chords are just a bunch of notes) and notation (so you can read music sheets, you need the previous two to be able to read music notation well and get the most out of it). That is enough to play any music without taking the fun out of it. Scales, chords and notation just tell you what key (or key combination) to press on your instrument and when; you can use that knowledge to play any song you like on whatever instrument you want to. It won't rationalize music, it will just tell you how to play it using an instrument and I am sure that is what you want. I mean, you always could just look for video tutorials on how to play a song you like on guitar or piano if that is what you want.
>>2848 https://musictheory.pugetsound.edu/mt21c/MusicTheory.html ch 1-6 (triads) covers what above anon said and is the minimum to understand and appreciate music on a deeper level than just playing notes you read off sheet music like a robot. it also helps with composition if you're into that. ch 7-9 are useful too. you don't really need the rest, unless you are interested in specific topics >Is this irrational? yes you are irrational. stop being a panzy
