MTX. Can't stand this stuff, every year it feels like eventually the whole industry is going to follow the gacha/lootbox route on even single player games.

Pointless DRM doing nothing but causing hassle for people who bought the game. Why bother, it will always be cracked in the end.

Even GTA4's draconic SecuROM DRM got cracked in a short time, as did Assassins Creed 2's requirement to be online all the time. It's actually easier to pirate and install both than it is to buy them.

What did they expect when they crammed shit like that service you have to call into just to find out the name of the song playing on the radio (which all sucked), that then tries to get you to buy it off amazon or somecrap?

This is what you have to do to install it:

1. Insert disc
2. Install 'Rockstar Social Club' which is just a launcher that also does patching, it starts on Windows startup by default without asking and it must be open to launch the game.
3. Install Games for Windows Live, a completely useless piece of shit that again starts on startup by default and is required for the game to laucnh. You also can't play online without creating an account.
4. Start installing game
5. Spend 30 minutes figuring out why the fuck SecuROM isn't accepting your product key
6. Download patches, one of the recent ones exists solely to remove the 'Social Club' thing.

Then every time you want to play the game.

1. Insert disc (No-CD patches for retail versions don't work with mods thanks to SecuROM)
2. Start up Games for Windows Live: it's still necessary because :reasons:
3. Launch game
4. Wait 2 minutes for the developer screens to pass
5. Wait another 2 minutes for the long as shit loading times
6. Enjoy your extremely badly ported game that runs like complete arsegravy on every computer.

Rockstar can fuck off good and proper. What's annoying is that nearly all of this shit isn't necessary if you pirate it. Oh, and you still have to use Games for Windows Live even if you buy it through Steam. Why?

When done correctly it goes as
Part 1 introduced new ideas and is what makes the money
part 2 uses the money/experience to make a better game, which builds on part 1 but trys to be fresh.
part 3 does as before.

but what we have in the industry now.
part 1, include as little content as you can get away with, so you can use it as DLC or possibly use it for the sequel.
part 2, same as 1.
part 3, same as 2.

It's funny becuase some games have been found to already have the dlc they make you pay for, on the disk you already bought, such as with gtaIV for example, which was found to have stuff from the first expansion already in it.

I dislike modern DLC, like in fallout new vegas the main game is 50 hours or so, yet they release a whole lot of DLC which are self-contained plotlines about 2 hours long. >games taking a free roam approach but not really having anything fun to do.

I think the reason why open world games became so popular, is becuase the makers see it as a easy and rather lazy way of extending game play time by having the player spend 50% of his time playing the game just getting from one mission or event to the next, as they travel across the same clone stamped terrain over and over.

There's casual as in 15 year old kids that rarely play video games if it's not with their friends in the room, who think it's "gay" to play video games alone, and who only do so as they use that time to yell at random people on xbox live.
(Today I was playing a game with a pop up that kept coming talking about how I can play with my friends online or some crap, I told my tv to fuck off and that I have no friends.)

Then there's the type of casual gamers that are little dumb kids or just old.
The type that don't know shit about video games and need helping hands for everything in games.
They're the ones with your cooking mama or other such interactive and overly simple games.

Oh and let us not forget the hipster type of casual gamers, the type that mostly just play iPhone games, and who show off their mario shit because it's so cool and nerdy, the ones who only play interactive console games at home which can be played with friends, like on the wii or the move or konnect.

I think we might need more terms to expand on "casual" since it has clear sub genres, which game developers treat very differently and market to differently.
for the frat kids they make call of duty clones
for the idiots you got all those simple puzzle games, and games that practically play themselves.
for the hipsters you got games like rock band, or whatever else required waving around a big plastic dildo in front of a tv.

I am completely and utterly fed up and pissed off as hell with pc games and their 360 controller crap.
I do not own a 360 controller, I do not want to buy a 360 controller.
There is nothing wrong with the usb game pad I currently own.
When the hell did it get this way? it's like every single dev forgot there are game pads out there that are not xboxbox controllers.
When a game says "press Y" how the crap am I supposed to know what button is 'Y'?

Earlier I tried playing some game, this menu says press B to exit/return, I have no idea what button is supposed to be B, but then I find it, I change the keybindings in the game's menu for my pad to something that works for me, and now that I exited the key binding (with their B button), that button isin't B anymore, but they still tell me to press B to exit/return after the binding has changed, but all the menu keys have also changed becuase of the binding, and because those ass hats only show the actual number of the keypad during binding, I have no clue whatsoever what button is what.
God I wish I could kick ever dev in the balls that does this crap.
the game recognises the numbers of each button on my pad, and the pad has those numbers on the buttons, yet they still show 360 buttons everywhere outside of the key binding sub menu.
Is Microsoft forcing pc game developers to do this in order to push their peace of crap game system?
seriously, fuck them, I'm sick of this.

yeah racing/car games don't work well with keyboards I think.

The thing is though, it's not just low budget games, most games out there do this.
this was something that was actually added into the game dead island with an update, the game originally had a mouse icon before with the door smashing mechanic, but it then got switched for a 360 analog stick when I updated, and I wasn't even playing that game with a pad.

what's worse is when it's fully incorporated into the game play of a game.
When I was playing just cause 2 using a pad, They had minigame quicktime event things, requiring you to press something like 10 buttons in the order they show up as in the time limit.
Not as easy as it sounds when the buttons they show are buttons you don't have.
I tried modding that game just to replace those stupid icons, but was never able to find where those icons were saved in the game's data, they were pretty well hidden.

then there's crap like this, image related.
the hud and pick up items are based around xbox buttons, and the possession of those hud buttons ignores custom key binding.
They're not being lazy, they're doing this completely on purpose.

I just have a rough time with the XBox controller in general. I suppose I am too used to having a gamepad on the left and 2-4 buttons on the right.

I don't own a XBox, so whenever I play some game with my roommate and his friends, our skill levels (though I would normally be well above them... in terms of fighting games like Blazblue for instance) are more or less turned even because I can't get the commands off on that strange controller. They do it like it is no problem though.

Really? I don't own an Xbox and have no intention of ever getting one (unless someone will be willing to give it to me for free) but I love the 360 controller. Actually, I'm pretty sure it's my favorite controller of all time*. Only two other controllers ever felt as comfortable for me - some Logitech pad (can't say which model, I borrowed it from a friend of mine a few times) and Wavebird. If the 360 used Wavebird's assymetrical button placement I would never use any other controller again.

First of all, this is pretty damn obvious. There's no reason to add 'if you ask me' or other crap like that every time you voice an opinion.

And even then, he actually did do that, most likely in an attempt not to anger people who are offended if everybody and their mom doesn't agree with them.

I mean it doesn't get any more obvious than that. It's plain impossible.

Second, you can stop getting angry whenever someone mentions a gaming system that wasn't developed by Sony. You like them, we get it. Hey, I like them too. PS2 was by far the best paltform of the 6th gen. Doesn't mean I can't enjoy other companies' products and point out that while Dual Shock felt comfortable to me over 10 years ago it doesn't do the trick for me anymore. You are free to disagree of course but please, don't get angry again, I bet it's bad for your health to be under this much stress.

-Auto-Aim on consoles.
-Can't back up through dialog incase you missed what it said.
-No split screen multiplayer/co-op.
-On PC, no split screen multiplayer/co-op. This one sounds odd, but if it was a common thing we could just replace consoles with PC, and hook them up to our TVs, and it could do everything a console/DVDplayer/Cablebox/AudioSystem/etc does.
-In RPGs all the endless battles that offer no challenge. Sometimes I wish there was a mode where you could play without the battles and just enjoy the story.
-No more unlockables, I already know I am capable of getting them that is why they exist. Give me access to everything from the beginning and if I want a challenge I won't use it.
-Limiting options and game modes, You should be able to directly manipulate every single constant/variable in the game. ie: change gravity, # of teams, handicaps, # of enemies, enemy weapons, weather, AI level, objectives, etc, etc. Within reason though, as long as the system doesn't crash it is ok.
-Can't save after you die, forced to spend hours leveling up. This is usually how most Final Fantasys end (especially 3).

Which commentators do you find annoying?

Personally, I think humor is more important than professionalism in the world of game casting. I can forgive a lot of amateurish moves as long as there's humor and viewer connection. My favorites are day9, lagtv, artosis and tb. The rest that I'm familiar with just doesn't intrigue me on that same level. I think it's a matter of originality vs effort when it comes to my personal preferences on casters.

---

On topic:
I'm in general tired of the various trends modern consoles advocate. For example the menus and navigation there of in TESV. The controller limitations are ever so present, and I'd be cool with that if I was playing with a controller, but I'm not - I'm playing with a keyboard and mouse.

That's a point of annoyance that I feel hits me as of now. There's another point that I feel is just waiting to bite me, and that's social gaming. I'm so afraid of this trend and everything it manifests that I have to this day more or less effectively evaded it. Forced profile creations are bad, but now I know more or less what games to evade in order to free myself of these gaming profiles. Luckily for me, those games with their respective companies don't much appeal to me. If, however, this trend becomes the definite norm, it might just end up hurting me bad, and I'll be forced to compromise even greater on my gaming.

Lastly there's DRM, and if it weren't for game clients such as Steam, it would probably lead to me quitting on games alltogether. I don't buy physical copies of games unless I know it supports steamworks. I despise discs for a number of reasons, and threw away my DVD drive long ago just to force myself off of this terrible storage medium. My condolences to those stuck on slow internet connections.

I'm so completely sick of westernization of game box art.
taking things that are nice and making them bleak dark gritty or just hiding it as the case is with many games, pisses me right off.
They're sending a clear message that you should be ashamed to buy something nice/cute/happy
good example of this would be all the Kirby covers they use and keep the same except for making him look pissed off in the American versions.
This shit is a complete insult to western gamers and needs to stop already.

and for what? so some little bastered who's ashamed of his hobby can pretend to be buying something socially acceptable at the cost of the rest of us?
or is it because they think most Americans are retarded and wont buy a game that doesn't have tits and guns on the cover?

Overpowered final bosses, or final bosses that are unbeatable without a certain set of skills/equipment/resistances. This has happened in a lot of JRPGs I've played lately.

I just want to continue with the story, I want to see the ending. But no, I have to drop everything and go grind somewhere. Completely ruins the build-up to the final boss and ending.

I've actually written a game that's entirely underwater, but the story is only a paragraph or two and my drawing ability is nonexistant.

Now for my complaints,Skyrim; now I know lots of people love this game and I do too,but it has a lot of things that could be significantly improved IMO.
-glitches:There's no excuse for releasing a game with so many glitches and Bethesda needs to make fixing it for free a priority ASAP.
-lack of ability to kill children:In a game that's supposedly all about freedom of choice having invincible children is fucktarded. It's also bad beause the kids will sit up at night and ruin any attempts at feeding and thievery.
-lack of nudity:Another thing that bothers me is how people NEVER get naked and you always have to leave a token tunic bikini on female bandits after you kill them and search them.

These are things I'd like in the game,and might pay for as DLC;

-more clothing options.Especially sexy clothe for the female characters.Maybe a french made outfit.
-the ability to ride Odaviing instead of horse.Come on Bethesda.
-allow polygamy
-an extremely powerful illusion spell that renders anyone hit by it as the equivalent to a slave or housecarl forever or until you release them.
-Using this spell would give the player more options in regards to the NPCs behavior.
-Examples are the ability to command women to wear any clothes you choose as well as command them to marry you even if they normally aren't a marriage option. Also you could tell them to do other things like clean your house. In certain cases you could also tell other characters to do actions specific to them.Such as telling Aela the Huntress to transform and help you fight,or telling a vampire NOT to feed so they advance to a higher vampire stage.

On average I'd say the higher the battle to adventure/puzzle/etc ratio is the worse the game is.

Speaking of bosses the PoP:sands of time boss, at the time I was dissapointed, but in retrospect it was refreshingly easy For those that haven't played, he is a old man with a stick, and takes miniute to beat, and you are practically invincible with your time rewinding abilities, not that you need them though actually getting to him was hard as they removed all the save points for like 20 minutes of playing.

Heh, I was about to post the same thing. I don't mind Day 1 DLC. Just don't make me pay for it when I paid for the game. Or if you really want me to shell out those extra 10$ decrease those 10$ from the cost of the boxed game. I 200% serious here.

I swore to never ever buy a game with Day 1 DLC, no matter how innovative, spectacular and worthy of support the game itself is. I don't like paying for the product and being spit in face for it. I mean really, I don't expect the devs/publishers to treat me like a king just because I bought their product. I decided it's worth the money and bought it, it's a fair trade, nobody has to be grateful to anyone here, it's supposed to be a win win situation. Just don't treat me like shit and we'll get along just fine.

Remember when Criterion released free maps for Burnout Paradise? 'Hey guys, there's no special occasion and we know we neither promised nor even announced anything of the sort earlier but we did a few new maps for Burnout so feel free to download them'. That was a really classy move. It's way, way more than I'd expect from a dev. Purchasing a polished product is good enough for me but I'd never expected anyone to hand out freebies for no reason whatsoever. When I read it I honestly felt like grabbing my wallet and buying the game even though I have no interest in racing games (in the end I didn't buy it but you get the point).

And like the reports say, next gen games will be probably priced at 70$. You know why? For the same reason they release DLC - because people will pay for it.

I don't see CD Project mentioned enough in this sort of discussion. I suppose that would get old in the long run, so maybe it's for the best to keep the pure out of this dirty business.

Personally I'm more focused on making the most benefitial compromise when it comes to situations such as these. There are two developments I don't like in the meta perspective of modern games - DLC and redundant, non-generic dependencies. Both issues can be avoided by either ignoring or waiting. I can ignore certain DLCs alltogether or I can wait for a "final" release of the given game in the later stages of its shelf life. I can ignore a game with ugly dependecies altogether or I can wait for its publisher to either can or sell whatever they're pushing.

Though I must admit that ME3 is fast becoming a hard nut to deal with in this scenario. It's like they want me to both pirate and crack everything. I think I'll end up awaiting some kind of "ultimate release" with the whole trilogy and all its DLC shit, and then look into cracking it off of Origin.

The easiest route is to see the developers butcher their own franchises.

Terrible, lazy pixelated graphics that are being heralded as "artistic" and/or "stylized". I have nothing against retro graphics, and graphics in general are never a major selling point for me...but I'm seriously sick of people saying that games in that vein have "good" graphics simply because they're "artsy and different". Then they proceed to rehash the same shit all over again the next week when another random 4-hour cheapie game comes out on XBL. This is hipster dreck at its worst.

I know what you mean but I kinda disagree. If you're talking about something like pic related then yeah, you're right, no question about it. But there are some guys producing top quality sprites and that deserves some recognition. Graphics obviously move forawrd so what looks good today will look average in a year but when it comes to 8/16 bits you have to compete with eveyrthing released over last ~2 decades.
>> No. 6560 [Edit]
>>6556
Isn't this meta related? More importantly: what does it matter to you what people say? It would be a flippant claim to say that said reception affects the outcome of future game projects. That's mostly up to finances, I believe. Note that certain "developers" are lazy assholes no matter what reactions their games invoke, eg. Notch.
>> No. 6561 [Edit]
"retro" graphics are basically just a marketing thing in addition to being a convenient way to not have actual effort put into visuals. Default Minecraft for example looks like garbage, but it's "OK" because that's "retro".
>> No. 6562 [Edit]
>>6561
>marketing
You're joking. It's indie we're talking about.

Minecraft isn't really retro, it's just basic. Cave Story, Yume Nikki, Jamestown, VVVVVV, Lone Survivor, Gemini Rue, etc. is retro - as it was very clearly a concious design choice, thus adding to the games' aesthetical integrity. In the case of Minecraft it was the fanbase who gave the game any integrity to speak of whatsoever, and the media hyped it up like mad. Mojang got everything for free with Minecraft. This is not the norm as most indie developers are just barely getting by, and they work for what they get. That's part of the nature of being independent, and seeing it downplayed is unsightly.
>> No. 6563 [Edit]
>>6562
well said.

Giant ugly blocks aren't 'retro', they're just giant ugly blocks. most 'retro' games didn't look like that, except for maybe stuff on the atari, but people still thought that looked like shit, even when it was new. and I doubt most people are talking about 70's games or atari stuff when they think of 'retro graphics' they probably think more of stuff on the NES, like the super mario games, but that stuff had twice the detail that modern day 'retro' games have.
>> No. 6564 [Edit]
>>6559
I've played plenty of games with "retro" spritework that I've thoroughly enjoyed. My problem is when they actually treat it as a selling point and an excuse to not put more effort into more important components (namely gameplay).

>>6560
Read above: it's not so much about "what people say", and more about advertising a shortcoming as something to be appreciated. Bear in mind that I'm not talking about fans, but rather prominent reviewers and the companies themselves.

>It would be a flippant claim to say that said reception affects the outcome of future game projects
Is there a typo or a missing word here? I'm pretty sure that the reception of a game does affect what a company does in the future...at least most of the time.

>>6562
Jamestown is one such retro-styled game that I enjoyed. At least they made an effort to make the game fun, and didn't go on a tangent about how "artistically brilliant" it was.
>> No. 6573 [Edit]
>>6564
>Read above
I did; admitedly I had trouble figuring out what parties you were refering to - fans, media or developers. I took a guess on the fans. If it's media then yeah, media sucks, but it's still meta. If it's the developers then we're onto the comment you quoted me on, which I'll explain. With "said reception" I refered to the following that you wrote:
>I'm seriously sick of people saying that games in that vein have "good" graphics simply because they're "artsy and different"
It's my opinion that such elements in the games' overal reception shouldn't affect the coming games notably, as in creating trends. What I do believe creates trends is the financial element of the games' reception. Whether the one leads to the other or vice versa is extremely complicated to determine for sure. My point is this - if the artistic and element is key to a given game's presentation, then people will buy the game only if they buy the whole "artsy and different" thing. If they do buy it then there's clearly a market for it, and if you specifically are unhappy with it, then you're excluded from that market group. This problem is close to the OP, but not quite, as it leans towards genre complaints rather than general complaints. I'm sorry for being unclear on this. That being said it's still a matter of opinion.

The complaint that game developers should put gameplay over aesthetics and graphics is undeniably valid, but I don't think it's necessary to pick on indie developers if this is what you wish communicate.
>> No. 6574 [Edit]
>>6573
I see where you're coming from- even when I was typing up my original post, I thought it might come across a little "off" in regards to the original topic. But it's a growing trend that does bug me.

As for indie developers, I'm certainly not picking on them as a whole. I enjoy plenty of indie games, and I don't think their ability to make quality games should be judged solely by their budget. I don't think it's unreasonable to say that indie games tend to shine more in the gameplay department, though. For that reason I'm really not a fan of games with very shallow gameplay that "make up for it" by being "artistic", be it via pixel art, silhoutte sprites, or even non-graphical things such as a convoluted plot that's passed off as "deep". There are some non-indie games that do this, too, and I dislike them just as much (if not more).

In short, I think that games are artistic in their own way already. Games that attempt to be "good" by putting way too much emphasis on artistic value (at the expense of more important issues), though, annoy me.

These 3 things are why I like MGO so much, despite the whiney awful fanbase. BF3 is also a honorable mention for custom games and a server browser. 24/7 OP metro is fun.

Zombies would be cool if they were ever done right in games. They are supposed to be a slow, constant threat that is always risky to fight because one bite and you are done for. Instead games these days just make them canon fodder that you can jump around in without a care in the world. Project Zomboid looks like it's gonna do zombies right, but I've been wary of the developers since one of them had a meltdown

I played project zombroid not a few days ago, and I have to say that it's actually coming out quite nicely.
It was a lot better than expected, but it still has a long ways to go. I just hope that the developer can keep his priorities straight and doesn't try to appeal to a wider audience by simplifying the game.
I just wish it wasn't coded in java, though.

A game that was hurried in the sense of visual effects.
I don't mind bad graphics, I mean I really don't but what I hate the most out of anything that any developer could ever do to his game is not take the time to optimize it.
The most important thing to me is a good framerate and a good story. since the second thing is almost impossible to find these days I mostly tend to rely on the constant framerate, even then most developers of today are too lazy to take the time to optimize their engine and the such.

Forced button mashing segments are worse than quick time events. Both are pseudo-gameplay bullshit that add nothing worthwhile to the game, but at least quick time events don't wear you out nearly as much.

Tailing.
It's not 'that' big of a deal to me, but I still find it annoying when it comes up.
you know, when you have to follow a car from a distance, but not too far away.

A lot of games just don't do it right at all. they wont take corners or obstacles into account and just go purely off proximity, which can be a real problem when taking corners. even if you're following them at a set distance, and they take a corner around a building, you're getting closer to them as they do so, this has can easily result in a failure.
and what the heck are you supposed to do when they stop at a red light or something? just stop where you are? so they really not suspect they're being followed when they look back and see a car parked in the middle of the street?

I'm not sure if it would be right to call it hard, it's just programed poorly.
passing the mission seems less to do with skill as much as just dumb luck.
the motor bike is set to barely keep up with the train, problem is the NPC on the back of your bike, they limit his fire rate and his accuracy sucks, yet the mission is completely dependent on him.
killing those 4 enemies with the same gun would normally take a few seconds, but that fat fuck drags it out for the whole mission.

On a modded version of gtasa, I used a ramp spawner, to jump onto the train and kill them myself, and finished the mission before they even reached the tunnel.
>> No. 7085 [Edit]
>>7083
I used cheat codes to give myself a machine gun so that I could kill them myself since he sucked so badly as an assist. I'm not sure if I used the Flying Vehicles code, but it would've made it faster than the train and I would have probably ended dive bombing onto train, killing whoever that guy with me was.

Cheat codes made GTA good. It was never fun to play without them. It really sucks that they made it so that cheat codes would mess the game up at a certain point if you used them too many times (as I did in my first play through).

Let's see, from what I remember the game froze pretty often, and maybe something else. I don't really remember since it has been years since I've played SA.

>>7180
I had no idea that that sort of stuff happened. I thought that only your rank would stay low and freeze constantly if you've done them enough times. I've used cheat codes for everything and abused them to beat tough missions or for anything. I knew a bunch of codes by heart and would input them within a second. I would also use them during cutscenes just because I could. I had a ton of fun recruiting randoms and giving them a set of pretty good machine guns, then getting on my self-spawned 4-wheeler and giving myself a jetpack while flying at high speeds through the sky, then crashing as hard as I could wherever I needed to be (or gently landing on the road/sidewalk/wherever if I felt like it). Whenever somebody gave me a weapon I didn't like I'd always switch to my trusty OHKO Desert Eagle with enough bullets to kill every NPC in my way and enough to last me more than half of the game. I think that I've also changed the weather whenever it was unsuitable. Anyway, I abused those codes way, way too much.

>>7182
I remember something like that. I think that I probably got through that by spawning the truck or something. I don't remember much of what i did and I don't even remember if I beat it (which would be a shame since I got pretty far). I did so much that all I remember is being a dick to the NPCs and abusing the codes to kill enemies in cool ways.

Oh, and I should note that I did this on the old PS2.

I searched with cntrl+F for "turn based combat"

Seriously?
a 200 post thread?

I am tired of that, beyond belief. Sure, I loved those games in the early 90's and all, but they STILL make games like that? holy mother. I thought Final fantasy finally evolved with their 12th game which had an amazing combat system, its a damn shame that wasn't expanded on into the next game. The combat should have been fast paced, no pausing, pick an action or spell for the situation based on your proximity to the monsters and things like that. Adding things like action ques if you are confident enough with characters, switching weapon types mid fight. The license board was great but needed a limit of license points. The world is one I can't even find a comparison to in final fantasy history. It was like a larger and more open saga frontier.
How did they mess up that badly in 13!!!

not only final fantasy though, but games like atlier and others. Or at least add some more depth like what I hear pokemon games have, with breeding stats and other crazy things.

New combat systems, please!

What he meant to say is that he's sick of (tradional) jRPGs. I say traditional but I think most people who do like them don't really think of non-turn based RPGs as jRPGs (myself included), not even series such as Tales of. I mean, is there really any reason to do so instead of coming up with a new label? For exmaple you don't call Mass Effect a cRPG, people came up wRPG instead (I'm very grateful to them, I really like cRPGs).

As for myself I like jRPGs for what they are. If I had been born some 10 years ago I would hate them for sure because they are archaic and - to be perfectly honest - boring. But playing them now reminds me of the times when I was having a blast playing all the Lufias, Manas, Chrono Triggers, FFs (and countless others) on SNES. In the end it's all about nostalgia. I for one hope they won't completely die out (although ever since DS and PSP bit the dust I see less and less of them).

I know I've brought this up a few times in the past, but I'm just so sick of it.
I'm primarily a console gamer, but sometimes I like to play pc games, and sometimes I like to use a game pad. The thing is, I only play on play station consoles and microsoft has a acquired a monopoly on gamepads in pc games. play station controllers can be used on PC too, but do game makers care? hell no. Even if I use a controller that isin't a xbox controller (or Play station), games with still display xbox buttons, and this drives me fucking nuts. Because I'm so acostomed to playstation buttons I'm always getting buttons mixed up in games. the green A button (at the bottom of the controller)looks like the green triangle button (at the top) on a PS controller, and the blue X button (left I think) looks like, well, the blue X button on a PS controller (bottom). I don't expect everyone to have this problem, but I can't stand this crap. I've even tryed spoofing the pad as a mouse and keyboard, but games will auto detect the pad and assume it's a 360 controller and switch back and forth rapidly between keyboard and xbox icons.
I couldn't tell you how much time I've spent looking into saints row 3 mods just to remove those damn icons (with no luck). It really makes me just not want to play PC games, at lest not the type I believe would be better with a game pad, such as driving games.

I feel like they just do this shit to subtaly ease pc gamers over to xbox. I also wonder if they'll ever force PC games to stop supporting non-microsoft brand keyboards and mice.

the best thing to remember is the locations of the buttons. Xbox and Playstation have similar layouts in that the bottom of the cross is accept and the right of the cross is cancel. Triangle to Y are easy enough to remember, but X may throw you for a loop.

But yeah I guess I could believe that about pushing people over to PC, since they've ported all their biggest 'exclusives' to PC.

>>7847
The problem with trying to learn it, is how similar and backwards the buttons are. I guess I might say it would be like trying to learn a new number system, where some of the symbols for numbers got switched around. like if 1 was actually six, and 5 was nine. The new numerical order would be something like 62H491P85. Getting used to something like that would drive anyone insane.

I have a hard time believing anyone who ever held both controllers could say something like that. First od all PlayStation controllers are TINY. Could they be any smaller? They are a pain to hold... Or rather, with my hands they are impossible to hold at all. Now, I realize I have pretty fucking big hands so part of this is only my biased perspective but even with normal sized hands I can't imagine someone could hold those handles comfortably. Too damn short.

Compared to that Xbox's are a bit longer and the pad itself is profiled nicely. If anything the 360 pad is a Wavebird 2.0 with a fucked up button placement. Having an analogue stick above a D-pad is a huge plus for me but the button placement sucks. I have a hard time pressing the B button, it's too fucking close to the edge.

As long as the company is honest about what they are doing, there really shouldn't be any complaints.

I believe in the future that the trend of monetisation will continue and companies will outright disregard player satisfaction in pursuit of profits. Eventually it becomes the new norm and the industry creatively stagnates, like with corporate music and film.

A game that I've been playing the past year (Realm of the Mad God) just banned all my other accounts which I were using to store equipment and level-up potions, destroying all my grinding and hard work. If you look at the official forums for the game, 50% of the discussion is simply players complaining about the monetisation of the game and the company not giving a shit about the players. I lost patience and put the game on Leechblock. I can complain further, but I'm not patient enough to waste any further time on that kind of rant.

It drives me nuts when your characters walking and running speeds don't match that of NPCs. I know it's a little on the trivial side, but when you're following someone(or the other way around) and you have to keep stopping for them to catch up or keep tapping the forward button to stay in pace with them, it kind of brakes the flow and I can't understand why it's so common. if you get distracted or something, the npc can just wait for you. There's no reason why the npcs couldn't be made to walk a tinny bit faster.

TPS and FPS games being just about shooting in interactive hallways, said hallways are usually also laden with cutscenes.

This is the main reason why I've hated MoH, GoW, Uncharted and CoD since their inception. And their multiplayer, good fucking god it has always been shit too. Red Orchestra, BF1942 and ET are much better and each try to do innovative or interesting things.

I also hate 3d platformers where double jumping or a homing dash is used to make platforming easier instead of having the devs/testers do their job. Crash Bandicoot Wrath of Cortex, and the Modern Sonic games are both heavily guilty of this.

I don't like how modern games reward you for every little thing you do. Finished the tutorial? here's an achievement. Watched a cutscene? That's another achievement. Talked to some random NPC? +500 XP! Solved a puzzle even someone with down syndrome could figure out? Here, have $10,000!

Another thing I don't like is the sandbox concept. It's cool at first, but then you realize that a game can get boring when the map seems too massive and there are a million possible things to do and the game doesn't really give you much direction as to where to go. That's how I felt when I played Just Cause 2. And a lot of the "new" areas I would explore honestly didn't feel all that different from some old places. When there's a giant map, they do reuse a lot of models and space stuff out.

Connecting to internet for singleplayer, aka DRM or anything that is "anti-piracy" but only ends up encouraging people to pirate

Anything that amounts to resembling an "Over the shoulder Third person shooter"

Free too play, or what it really is, pay to win

Retro style in indie games, despite the game not playing retro or worse, not even being a game, not to mention retro style just looking like giant "pixels" and nothing like old games. Shit like that makes the game look like a joke or an insult, or just seems like a way of saying "I can't draw, so here's my attempt at retro style!"

Generic brown war FPS

What passes as "Art" these days

DLC at launch, pre-order exclusives, excessive DLC that you can't possibly buy all of without selling all your belongings

EA

Crap map design that basically amounts to "Good looking hallway"

Every game either being FPS or (if it's big budget) random sandbox game (even though some times sandbox games can be legendary, other times they could just be another uninteresting one or just end up being forgotten because GTA isn't in the title)

Every Western RPG either being Medieval times or Post Apocalypse, with occasional space opera

Bullshit Distopian future (the whole thing has been overdone, not everything has to be Half Life 2)

Every game being Half Life 2

Every game being Call of Duty

I think I could go forever here

I don't think achievements are that bad. They're easy to implement and don't take away anything from a game while only adding extra goals to possibly squeeze a bit of more life out of the game.

Games that are still using isometric camera views. It was nostalgic 10 years ago. Now it just serves no purpose but to restrict your view of the gameplay in the worst possible way. If the player's vision NEEDS to be restricted for gameplay reasons, there are much more elegant and sensible ways to do so.

The only real exception to this are turn-based RPG/strategy games wherein it doesn't really matter if the camera (or your inability to properly move it) hinders the action, as it won't affect your efficiency anyway.

Funny, earlier this week I was talking with a friend of mine how I'm glad some games still use isometric view nowadays and how the RPG genere basically died for me the second it moved away from it.
To each his own I guess.

It's not a big deal, but it bugs me a bit when games ask me to input a first -and- last name. I don't much like using my real name, and I'm not the type to play a Lenthly game as "Drew Peacock". I'd rather just use my online nick, since it feels more accurate than my 'real' name anyways. Last time I played a game like this I ended up going with <real first name> <online nick>, assuming characters in game might call me one or the other. Instead it ended up being both together much of the time.

Anyone who plays TF2 think that the competitive update ruined the feel of the game?

I don't like competitive multilayer, I just want to play a fun game. They just added it to pander to the CS GO children, and it has fragmented the community, because the only unranked games are community servers, and they are all either weird gamemodes, modded, or just empty.

I hate that a full priced base-game comes with mtx as well. Used to be that mtx was only for f2p games and big studio games have everything in the game. Now? You gotta research how much is the price and what's in the game as well as what got cut for paid dlc. Ugh. Elden Ring and PoE are fine while Acti-Blizzard games fail for double-dipping.

Good things never last. Capcom had a 'comeback' in the last few years with games such as DMC V, Resident Evil 7, 2 Remake, 8, and I heard that people liked the Remake of 4 but I did not play it.
Then they squander all of that good faith again and ruin their back catalogue of games. Very cool!

This doesn't seem to make much sense to me, because the actual DRM itself is very sophisticated these days. The DRM itself doesn't prevent billy and his friends from copying, it's weeks of hard work for expert reverse engineers to make sense of it. Once a game is cracked though, it just needs to be downloaded from somewhere. Even this step is sometimes too much for normans, but that has nothing to do with the DRM itself or anything the game company can do. How and where the cracked game copy is distributed, is completely out of the control from the hands of the game developers/publishers.
>> No. 15117 [Edit]
>>15116
That gets me thinking, even if a game is entirely on a disc, it still has DRM. Can you really say you own a file if you can't make a copy of it?
>> No. 15118 [Edit]
>>15117
Arguably more so, than just having it on Steam or from the Playstation Store, but it really depends on the type of DRM. If it's just regular copy protection, I'd say you own it regardless, but as soon as it requires some external software or requires an online service to play, it's not yours anymore, because it's out of your control, what happens to the game. If the servers for the DRM get shut down, it'll be rendered unplayable or if the external software isn't available, it would render your game useless too.

For example a PS1 game, might have DRM, but always playable as long as you have the hardware and the game itself. There is nothing preventing you to play it in any case. It's yours. It applies to a lesser extent to old Windows games without online DRM or, because those require Windows itself, which is an ever-updating behemoth, but theoretically you can still use Windows XP in 20 years (it's just not as easy as putting the disk into your PS1 and start playing).

Assuming you have a working PS1, which aren't being produced anymore. Running XP in a vm is a lot easier than getting a fpga PS1 clone to run your physical discs.

Honestly the OP post was about weapon limits, and how at some point it became the norm in games to only be allowed to carry 3 at a time. which is why the image has a heavily modded version of CJ from GTASA including a mod that displays all the weapons you have on your character
That much is something I've kinda gotten used to (not all games can be Ratchet and clank I guess)
At some point not long ago the post got edited and I never got around to fixing it.

As for gacha/lootbox, I really really hated seeing looboxes incorporated into single player games (I don't do multi much), but yeah I still hate the concept. For one thing, I tend to hate multiplayer games, that level of human interaction is more stressful and less fun for me, and this stuff just reminds me of some of the worst elements of multiplayer games in general. I mean the whole point of lootboxes is essentially gambling anyway, if you're not paying directly for rolls, you're still spending your time, it feels like a stalling tactic to keep you grinding for a small chance of getting items you need. Imagine going to work everyday just for a random chance of getting a paycheck at the end of the week.
When gaming made the shift from arcades to home consoles, they carried over a lot of the insane difficulty traits that were designed to suck up your quarters, but eventually devs realized there was no point in making home games with those elements, they already got your money. I feel like the same logic should apply to lootboxes in single player games. For that mater, I think it usually just makes no sense in the game world logic. When you're ancient ruins, you're finding treasure and items left behind, often those items can tell a story on their own about an adventurer who didn't make it and dropped his sword there. Instead I'm to believe they dropped their single use slot machine?

As for gacha, I suppose it's pretty similar, in some ways it's even worse, and I'll admit I've played my fair share of gacha games. It'd be a little hypocritical to defend it, but I will say gacha games feel like a much more long term investment so I guess that's why I find it 'less' annoying. I know I'm 'eventually' going to get that super rare moe.png. It feels like an inevitability if I keep playing the game, and those rolls feel like a separate thing anyway. I can play a gacha game without doing any rolling, and that's often exactly what I do until a moe.png comes along I want.

I don't think that was a good thing though. Arcadey design, at least in Japanese games, was not about just fucking you over unfairly but to get you to seriously engage with the game's mechanics and master them.

Well, no matter what principles games are being made with, some games are just bad. Arcadey games are still sometimes made today so it's not like they're completely gone either, although it's far from the norm.
