Does anyone have a tablet computer? I was interested in buying one for reading manga and stuff.

I want to avoid anything iPad related obviously. I was maybe thinking of the ExoPC; it looks pretty good and runs on Win 7. Only, the hardware is just about to become obsolete in regards to tablets so I wasn't sure. Check it out here: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/ExoPC

Please restrain from any comments like "buy a netbook" cause I already have one. I just want a tablet computer, because it reminds me of Star Trek compads from when I was growing up~

Sorry, I guess my question/point in the thread is to ask, does anyone own one or have any suggestions on what I could check out?

If you're going to be mainly reading, the Notion Ink Adam has a display that can switch between transflective and LCD modes, so you could read manga on a pseudo e-ink display, then switch to the LCD display when you need color. But, it's going for $500-550 and it won't be out until January 2011.
Specs here:

I ordered a China tablet, it's currently flying over the ocean right now~

I've heard horror stories about them, but hey-- it's only 100$ and I get to play with it without being too scared of breaking something expensive.

500-550$ is a shitton of money.

OP, if you don't mind waiting a month, look at dealextreme.com or nowsupplier.com, but be sure to look at the comments for dealextreme because some tablets like the dropad are having problems shipping.

If you just want to use it as a reader, don't look at ones with W7, but systems like Android that take up less processor power and battery. The biggest drawback to a tablet is battery I believe.

You should be thinking about what you want from screen size (10in is kind of huge), the touch screen (multi, single, capacitative?), the processor (for only reading it shouldn't be 2G), wifi (b/g/n), and battery. What you linked to, four hours is awfully short.

My laptop is a convertible tablet, meaning it's a full-fledged laptop (minus internal disk drive) and you can flip the monitor down and turn it into a tablet. It's a bit bulky for a tablet, though It's got a fancy-ass stylus that has an "eraser" end.

Though Toshiba is bullshit with proprietary drivers and other shit, so the tablet and most of the laptop-based functions don't work so I have to get the external disk drive the the bios knows how to deal with so I can use the factory restore disk so it can actually be worth something (since in terms of power and hardware, it's way dated)

Then again it was free, so it's not all bad.

I have an ASUS eee Transformer tablet and am very happy with it.

I read manga with a free comic viewer (ACV - Android Comic Viewer), can watch .avi anime using the default player and use Moboplayer to watch .mkv anime (480p or lower though, otherwise it's very slow).

Also browse the internet on it when not near my PC.

I thought I was the only one who did this

So I'm looking for a cheap tablet mostly for plain internet browsing and manga viewing. If possible also watching anime. In the 200-300 euro, perhaps?

Greetings.

It is a little known fact that chinese electronics are amazingly great! Some how they have become a shining example of what capitalism can be (ironically). They are second to none in the consumer electronics world, apple, sony, etc, cant touch them. But nobody knows, because no advertising, and "LOL CHINESE KNOCK OFF."

All chinese Portible Music PLayers, can play MKVs, OGG, FLAC, basically everything, so you can watch anime, and some are even capable of playing 1280p (though you can't watch it in 1280p, but it does mean 1080p won't lag).

here are some tablets, most run android.
http://mp4nation.net/catalog/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=68

here are some PMPs:
http://mp4nation.net/catalog/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1

100-200$ american + shipping from hong kong.

downsides are low memory usually, and bad battery life, but memory is upgradable, and you can keep them pluged in. some also have USB-OTG. Also lots you can hook up to your TV.

make sure you read reviews though, and search around, there are many many many brands, all offering slightly more or less, but some are better.

They're only second to none because their factories make apple, sony, etc, products and they simply take their plans and stuff parts they have in them. I've seen tablets with cell phone parts in them. They tend to have horrible batteries.

I am >>767
The only reason I bought one of these tablets is because of the cheap price, and because it was a decent clone that had decent parts. I'm still waiting for it to arrive though.

Anyway what I wanted to say was that you sound just like one of those chinese sites and to stop.

<take their plans

Thats totally not true, or atleast anymore, as I said they don't knockoffs anymore(well atleast when they aren't trying to con anybody). Apple uses Cirrus Logic chips(or something), and others use PortalPlayer chips, chinese players use the Rockchip for decoding media. Where Apple, and etc, like to be proprietary as possible, like not using USB-mini (sony), or only supporting their own file formats (apple), Chinese companies embrass the standards, and that cheapens development.

Here is a snipit from wiki on Rockbox chips btw:

"RK29xx is the first chip to decode Google WebM VP8 in hardware. It encodes and decodes H264 at 1080p, and most of the standard video formats (MKV, Xvid, H263, AVS, MPEG4, RV, WMV). The GPU is able to render OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenVG at a rate of 60 million polygons per second, six times the power of the iPad GPU. It is compatible with Android 2.3."

THe chinese are totally at the head of the game, because they unlike north american bussiness aren't driven by pop culture fads(fags). They are constantly updating everything, srsly they release like 20 different models a year.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockchip

there is also another one competeting with rockbox, but I forget name.

I don't know if OP is still watching this thread, but I got my tablet. Ordered here...
http://www.nowsupplier.com/suntoo-e86-android-22-via8650-inch-tablet-pc-support-flash-101-with-rj45-camera-p-1744.html
I kind of regret it--looking at the manufacturer's site, they came out with the E99 model....ohwell.

I can now completely recommend buying a China tablet. The build is so much better than I expected. The only "problem" is that, depending on the company, there is virtually no support out there. BUT for $100 I don't mind playing with my tablet and opening it, flashing the rom, etc.

I can't wait for the newer models a year from now--great hardware, cheap, and someone will have put an ACTUAL linux system on it. While Android 3.0/3.1 looks nice, I am getting apprehensive that it is turning into another type of bloated Windows.

This is kind of an exciting topic~ I've been looking up VN and eroge that run on Android and haven't found anything to download/buy, only news spots.

I have an iPad. Apparently there's social stigma about owning one, but I wouldn't know. With some tech knowledge, it's a lot of fun. I use it as a screen, as a sort of satellite to stream things to, and as a manga reader. I actually kinda like the touch keyboard for some perverse reason, so it gets duty as an expensive keyboard. It's replaced the toilet newspaper and accompanies me around the kitchen. I'm sorry OP for bringing it up, but it is a viable contender unless you're a fervent anti-monopoly person (fervent enough to not to pragmatically view jailbreaks as voiding this), or a Flash lover.

My only complaint is the price. Ordering a china tablet because it feels dangerous and cool.
>> No. 896 [Edit]
If you can afford an iPad...you can afford it.

There's no difference with specs--but the iPad tends to have a lot better ones. The only thing is, do you really need them?
>> No. 897 [Edit]
>>839
The social stigma is only among people who really hate Apple. Other than that I don't think people are going to look down on you.

My mom has an iPad, because she is tech illiterate and it's made things a lot easier for her to understand. It's pretty cool, and I like a lot of the things it does, though it's definitely not for everyone. I don't have a need for a tablet, be it Apple or Android anyway.

I'm the person who got a china tablet and is happy with it, BUT I would not advise you to get one. Most of the time, they are worse, and when they aren't, they still cost something ~300-400$. I would rather have an iPad, but I can't afford it. If you want something that works, no tinkering, then I think that the other anon's mother was correct in getting the appple product.

There is really no stigma, I think people actually really like them-- sometimes I get asked "OMG is that the iPad2??!!"...it's scary, so I run away. But people are conscious of them, and they respect those that have them.

Also, unlike some people here, I got a tablet to read/write papers on a 2hr commute...I'm a student, and will be for some time, so I felt it was a good investment.

Asus EEE Pad Transformer.

It, despite all the issues mentioned everywhere, is probably one of the awesomest things i've ever bought.

Since 3.2 it doesn't lag AT ALL, works almost perfectly and I can even run Linux on it!
>> No. 900 [Edit]
On a similar note, I've been thinking of getting a laptop to use in case my computer screws up or power goes out. What are some good cheap ones? I would use it solely for internet browsing, and maybe watching some anime.

I am excited for the new Google Nexus tablet that may come in early july ,8 inch screen seems rather nice have with future Jellybean. But my Kindle 4 will be sufficient for a long time for now..

Werent the chinese rip-offs better than the original Ipad shit?
>> No. 903 [Edit]
I would buy an iPad if it weren't for the certainty that a better model is coming out in 1-2 years, and half the apps you could run will crash. God damn technology fashionista shit.

I was thinking of different tablets, and in a perfect world, I would like an iPod touch 4 for a mobile and a windows tablet. However, I can't find anything affordable that isn't SAMSUNG MONOPOLY NIDA shit or Chinatown 3 minute battery life.

http://9to5google.com/2012/06/11/asus-rep-confirms-7-inch-nexus-tablet-coming-by-the-end-of-june/

>A tablet out of Google’s Nexus program has been rumored to launch for quite a while, and the consensus is that it is going to be announced at this year’s Google I/O between June 27 and June 29. An unnamed Asus representative confirmed to Android Authority at Computex this week that Asus and Google partnered to manufacturer the 7-inch tablet. It will be announced by the end of June. With that time frame, Google I/O sounds like the most likely place that the Nexus tablet will be announced.

>The representative was not able to offer any information on pricing or specs but said the tablet is going to be “awesome.” The Nexus tablet has been rumored to cost between $150 and $200 to compete with Amazon’s $199 Kindle Fire that now has more than half of the Android tablet market share.

Maybe I'll have to buy a tablet... It'd be great for watching anime in bed, and if it ran Windows 8 I could plug in a keyboard and mouse for a casual game of DOTA every once in a while.

I finally got a tablet but more so I could use it to communicate (deaf).

Had a hard time picking from anything that was not an iPad and was not shit. The best I could get here was an Archos running Android (gonna mess around with that). I got the 1.5GHz version.

Over all, they're really not that useful. I'm able to use it for what I need and it's nice for manga, but apart from that you could just use a PSP or other small device for most things.
