What song from Touhou is the greatest?

I would have to go with Remilia's Theme - Septette for the Dead Princess. The song itself pervades a pompousness and controlled power that is not unlike Remilia herself.

And here is the song, straight from the game WAV to 320kbps MP3.

My personal favorite is Voile, the Magic Library (TH06 stage 4 theme).

I always have a hard time with this question. If I had to pick just one, my favorite would be Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom ~ Nuclear Fusion.

A tie between emotional skyscraper and necrofantasia.

I like Alice in Wonderland from Mystic Square.

For the windows games it's hard to say... I'd probably go with Remilia's theme though.

I was jogging tonight, and this song came on at the end of my route. It seemed very dreamlike, and the road much like the intro stage of Mystic square where you enter the cave.

I think the PC-98 have more emotion to them, while the Windows era games become increasingly bombastic and convoluted.

On the same note, I also believe that creativity through adversity is excellent, and ZUN was forced to make his music more explicit and defined on the limited hardware of the PC-98.

This I agree with, ZUN's old works are much more expressive. Even in the PC98 days, he had a tendency to go crazy with the number of voices, many of which are redundant, but it was kept in check by hardware limitations. He seems to be getting better though, games 13 and 14 have many tracks with great melodies reminiscent of his older stuff.

I also find that the PC98 game soundtracks are consistently great while the Windows games have one or two standout tracks per game and the rest are forgettable. Overall, Mystic Square is my favorite.

Does anyone know the name of the song that plays at 16:41 on this video?

Someone in the comments mentioned Chrono cross. I went over https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gumt8xfnspk
but couldn't find it, but may have missed it. Still, some of the stuff there sounds similar at least.

Be of Good Cheer and U. N. Owen Was Her?. ZUN has a bad habit of writing carnival music with unrelated parts (the catchy theme coupled with arpeggio "breaks"). My favourite tunes showcase his ability to include actual themes (as more than snippets of melody to be repeated with different sounds), their variations, and development.

I like Remilia's theme a lot. It's based off of a Beethoven composition.

I have too many to choose a specific favorite. ZUN makes extremely unique music, it's so special and interesting. There's this really dark tone to a lot of his songs, it's weird, it's creepy.

Locked Girl is pretty high in my rankings. Patchouli is moe, the second neatest boss fight in EoSD. I like the hi-hats/beat in it as well. It's like the depressed child of a chamber music piece and a rejected techno song. The chorus-like part is really neat, too - It spells out "love" in morse code.

I'm also a fan of Dolls in Psuedo Paradise. It's all amazing. The Renko+Merry albums are okay, I like the more recent ones more - The 'carnival music' vibe seems to be more contained.
