Sup guys.

After resisting the pull for years, I've decided to make my way into the touhou world, but I know next to nothing of it, and since you guys seem to know everything about everything, and this IS the touhou board, where would be the best place to start?

The games, start with EoSD and make your way up and down.
http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Embodiment_of_Scarlet_Devil

Everyone will tell you the games don't matter, but please, for me, and for you, please play the games.
>> No. 1452 [Edit]
I skipped the games myself, because I am absolute rubbish at them
>> No. 1453 [Edit]
Don't start with EoSD, start with Imperishable Night. It's the easiest.

/jp/ is a nice place for people who don't play touhou games, to talk about touhou.

You mean it's a good place to spam forced memes and troll. I've never seen any good Touhou threads there... or any good threads whatsoever.

You have abnormally high standards.

for me I was able to appreciate the music after having played the stages since I can associate color with music.

That's what Touhou is about.

I was joking, they hate "secondaries" which is what they call people that like touhou but don't play the games, or anyone that even likes iosys.
but yeah you're right, it blows.

That's because IOSYS goes against canon personalities by making shit up. Now, with Touhou, you can't stick solely to canon without making some shit up, but when you make shit up that goes directly against canon, there's something wrong with that.
Naturally, it's just fanon and there's nothing wrong with it, per se, but IOSYS is the reason Eiki is depicted as a nagging loli with breast envy.

As for secondaries...Well, you'd have to have never played the game to think think you can be a Touhou fan without actually having ever played the games. It's the equivalent of claiming to be a big fan of [insert your favorite anime here] but only having read doujins of it and never actually watched the anime itself.
There are things you get in playing the games that you can't get from just reading doujinshi or listening to remixes of the songs. Personality traits are inside the spell cards themselves that each girl uses, and you can't possibly hope to understand until you can manage dodging them without even focusing on the fact that you're dodging them.

Does that sound stupidly and pointlessly fanatical? This is Tohno-Chan, is that supposed to be an insult here?

Damn, this. You don't even have to be good at the games. Just play them. You appreciate the music a lot better when you're hearing it in the course of the stages and battles too.

My problem is I am so awful at them I can't even get enjoyment out of them.

Not really. You don't need good reflexes and shooting skills to watch an anime

Don't forget that most anime doesn't look like ass, especially compared to fan art, and most anime will have more then a small handful of lines of dialog per character.

I hate what fanon does with Alice. She's among my favorite Touhou characters, but every Alice centered doujin I get has her fawning over Marisa or being an emotional train-wreck.

Every single one of them.

It really grinds my gears.

Being a big fan of the touhou world alone is the same as being a fan of any moeblob. Being a big fan of the Touhou games separates you from the rest of the human race. Only those who have been dedicated enough to go from fidgeter to master of concentration can really back me up on that. And what I am about to say is completely true:

When I first started playing touhou, I was a little annoyed at the fact that I got so hot while I was playing, despite the fact that I am only moving a fingertip a millimeter or so. I never sweat, and I've played a lot of intense games, none have ever done that to me. I would inevitably be forced to take my shirt off, and socks, in a COLD house, and still have it dripping down my front. Then my friend (we're buddists) showed me this thing on the "Buddha Boy", Palden Dorje, who was just one to learn from the monastery that has a "secret technique". It allowed Dorje (and others) to raise their body temperature at will, without moving an inch, in order to survive in even the harshest cold. The fact is, I used years of observing myself while playing Touhou to develop the meditation practice necessary to accomplish this myself. And I can now raise my body temperature at will, when NOT playing touhou. Among other things, it has alot to do with boosting the heart-rate, but I won't give away too much more at the moment. I never could have dreamed something so life-changing could come from some seemingly random game download.

I would love to have started a new thread on this topic, but I'm not sure how many here have experienced something similar...

That said, I love the music and IOSYS and mob dances and NSFW loli pics and everything to death!

When did that start, personally I never had that to noticable degrees yet.

Also, any tips what to look out for regarding the body temperature regulation business you are willing to share?

Think, when does your heart-rate raise considerably? When you are under immediate stress. Think when your mom was about to open the door while you were mastrubating. Emotions can induce the same thing. For me, it was more intense when I was working on a new game at the MOST difficult I could possibly handle, and endurance spell cards. To keep that high-stress level constant for minutes will raise your body temp enough to notice. You have to challenge yourself to the point of constant dodging. You can't do that on normal mode most of the time. Once you start to do that, study your nerves, your muscle tension in various places, and your psychology (aka: what is making me care so much? Why am I worked up?). Then, finally you find a way to fantasize that task or challenge that will create the stress in your head. To those particular buddhists, it's some difficult-to-recite mantra.
