It's been a few seasons since there was a good cgdct SoL. Don't be put off by the plot summary if you're not into mahou shoujo: the "magical schoolgirl" aspects are pretty much for background context only as we watch Momo and Shamiko do cute things.

The subbing on this is terrible though, as many of the signs aren't translated and there is unnecessary localization. The typesetting is also terrible for HS, although erai isn't that much better either.

The care that Momo shows towards Shamiko is very heartwarming. I have no idea what motivation she has to be so friendly perhaps it's her lack of family? but I don't want it to end.

There's also an interview with the author here:
https://media.comicspace.jp/archives/12126

Apparently the initial vision for Momo's character design didn't have her as kindhearted as she is now
>The peaches [Momo] at the stage of planning were more violent, and they were scolding and tightening Shamiko normally. However, as I drew my name [manga?], Shamiko gradually started to feel sorry, and finally it became a much softer exchange.

> perhaps it's her lack of family?
I also got the 'returned veteran' feel from this and the previous episode. Momo saved the planet.. has all these super-abilities.. and will spend the rest of her life never using them-- motivating her to hang around Shamiko, if not to train her up into being an adversary, to at least be with a comrade. Note her excitement at saving all the weeners.

Just wanted to throw out one possibility here. Maybe she feels sorry for Shamiko, who got thrown into something she clearly wasn't prepared for physically or mentally, and who is obviously too kind hearted to be a villain anyway. Maybe Momo doesn't want to see someone else get dragged into the same kind of situation she was?

The last episode when Shamiko went into Momo's subconscious showed a young Momo left traumatized by some event. That's probably a big piece of the puzzle.

Even among slice of lifes, I've found that very few portray friendships in a manner that seems almost tangible. Usually a friendship between two characters is just implicitly taken as a given and used as the starting point for comedy or plot, but it's never demonstrably built up through the tiny exchanges that show both care for each other. Even juggernauts in the genre like k-on don't fully do this: the only character they fully flesh out the relationships for is Azunyan (which makes the final scene all the more heartfelt), and this is only possible because we see her integration with her group over the course of the series. This isn't necessarily a fault of the anime (and the manga might do this better), it's just that when you have more characters there's a quadratic blowup in the need to develop their relations with each other.

Another series that does this very well (also a Kirara adaption) is Yuyushiki, partly because it limits its focus to three main characters. It takes great care to not only highlight the small details emphasizing their familiarity, comfort, and care for each other but in one episode also switches up the group dynamics to show that it's very much the shared bonds between the three of them that tie them together – the three form a mutually interdependent whole. There's the same sort of interplay/back and forth as well as subtle framing/artwork hints to provide that extra dimension of realism.
>> No. 33289 [Edit]
>>33241
I love Yuyushiki and it absolutely does nail the best friends dynamic. As a fan of cgdct/sol anime, I do thing it's a bit lame how we never truly see how the majority of these often times unusual friendships come about. Like you said they're just a given, at at best we get an flash back showing one character as a kid saving another (probably from some bullies), but I'd like to see where things go from there and most of these anime don't really explore that much, which is a shame.

>The subbing on this is terrible though

It really is bad, bad enough to make me give up on Horrible subs, really they just use Crunchyroll subs and I feel like they have too much of a monopoly now so I am boycotting them for all anime, but enough digression. Mad Le Zisell has better subs for it and at least didn't localise measurements but it's only in 720p.
>> No. 33326 [Edit]
>>33324
I was mainly referring to the way the subs used to jump all over the screen when multiple people were speaking at once. This seems to have been sort of fixed recently though (multiple dialogue now has all subs all at the bottom, which is a bit better but doesn't have any separation. Ideally it'd be top / bottom like erai does it). On the other hand signs and other things are typeset pretty well now, and they're even colored in!

Measurement localization doesn't bother me too much (probably since I'm in the US; I can see how it'd be annoying for other countries), but it's when the translators completely butcher a straightforward joke that I question their competence. For instance, the passcode joke "goro goro nyaa-chan" would be pretty easily understood to most people vaguely familiar with japanese numbers, and a TL note explaining "goro goro = rolling" should have been sufficient. But instead we got "live chicks n' jive tricks wahoo" which not only makes no sense but kills the joke entirely.
>> No. 33327 [Edit]
Measurement localization isn’t as common as it once was and sometimes non-imperial countries people say them in speech as generic shorthand for lengths. Another thing people get annoyed about is when soccer comes up instead of football, even though they call it soccer commonly oddly enough despite not having their own regional code of football and calling Eyeshield 21s American football Amefoot. Weird.
People react way too fast about subbing though, read Nyaa comments about that /ss/ show from a couple seasons ago and the subbers made a meme with imperial measurements in the description that wasn’t even in the show caused a shitfit in the comments and people refused to watch it.

The difference in reaction from fansubbers and horriblesubs is pretty funny, even though despite fuckups like this one I think HS causes the least problems whilst watching although I haven’t watched seasonal anime in a while but I remember extreme fuckups like this being rare.

This has been bugging me for a while. Mono isn't very clear about it, but the idea that she lost of a large chunk of her magical powers from loosing a drop of blood or two doesn't seem right at all to me. The way they talk about it makes it seem like she lost 20%-30% of her powers. Does this mean losing a 1oz of blood would mean loosing all her power and 2oz+ would mean losing negative magical power? Shouldn't her power be more evenly distributed? Wouldn't it make more sense to loose 1% of her power if she looses 1% of her blood? instead of 30% of her power with 0.1% of her blood?
I suspect she might simply be lying in order to push her agenda of Which I'm now starting to suspect is training a replacement for herself.

It just makes no sense and it's not even as if gram in Japanese is different from gram in English, you can clearly hear her say 500 grams yet they translate it as one pound, it's jarring and pointless. Most of the world doesn't even use that measurement anyway.

Yeah, I was annoyed by that to. That was still in the subs I use. I worry stuff like that will become more common with the greater popularisation of anime. I don't think I have seen HS do anything that bad in a while, but that's the thing. HS doesn't actually do their own subs or even care enough to fix them so it's not up to them.

I thought she said she lifted it without magic. It's possible she never had magic to begin with or only a very small amount as she says she is the weakest magical girl and the only magic we have seen her use is when she picked weaners out of the air, which was not really magic.

I don't think this is actually the case but it's possible.

New episode and a new character!
>>33328
As seen in this episode there does appear to be evidence that she's drained/exhausted. I'm not sure how much is attributable to the small amount of blood lost, but she may not be entirely bluffing.

I'm always worried when they introduce new characters (especially halfway into the series) since it can throw off the balance if not done right. Things were as good as always though, and with the care they've put into this I'll trust that they use Mikan effectively. Although now there are more loose ends (especially the relation between Momo and Mikan) which I'm not sure if they'll have time to resolve before the end of the series. Maybe hope for a season 2?

Last episode was quite a lore dump!

I guess we now know part of the burden that Momo has been carrying. As we learned in an earlier episode Momo had no family, so it's likely she was adopted by Sakura. And with this episode's reveal that Sakura suddenly went missing some time back, that might help explain some of Momo's trauma.

Finally had a chance to watch the episode and you're right the latter half of the episode seemed a tad faster than even S1.

Also I think I lost my $10 bet in >>36094. The actual dialogue was

>iya nani ka "ukare fruit sponge" datta jbun wo hajiteru dake da yo. Nani darō kono neko no shippo

So "peachy keen jellybean" isn't as bad as it seemed a priori. And the "cat's tail" was apparently part of a Japanese idiom meaning pointless, which is apparently because many Japanese cat breeds have very short tails, so they're functionally useless. Still not sure why CR decided to use pig's tail which doesn't make sense, nor why the edit that changed it cat's tail didn't include a TL context.

The Billibi translation also felt shoddy/fragmented this time, lacking sufficient surrounding context (or probably it's the fact that things were going fast enough to make it hard to fill in from audio). E.g.

BB
>Huh? Did you even do this without knowing it?
>From a teacher's point of view, I have to forfeit it.

CR
>Huh?! You mean you had no idea this whole time?!
>Speaking as your teacher, I'm afraid I can't allow this.

BB
>Lilith seems to have a bit of a problem as a guardian,
>so I will now take her in for a talk!

Ep 7: These avant-garde episode side-segments are getting interesting, especially because you wouldn't expect them in a show like this (as opposed to say something like Kitakubu or Animegataris where you become acclimated to the unexpected).

What shows did they reference in there? The obvious one I think was Gakkou-Gurashi since there was the classroom scene and a few other elements (e.g. dog, radio dj [which wasn't in the anime but appears to be an element in the manga, at least going by Wikipedia], etc.). But there are probably other references in that montage which I'm not familiar with?
