It's time for a new season to start! ... Unfortunately, the start was kinda wobbly.

I'm pretty excited about Mahou Tsukai for many reasons. For one it looks like for the first time in a literal decade Toei plans to stick to 2 Cures - a format I've wanted back for ages. Witches are a nice theme, feels like going back to the roots of the genre, with a classic spell/chant even. A bit surprising for PreCure though, considering the franchise's sentai inclinations.

But ep 1 poured some cold water on my enthusiasm. I actually have a hard time remembering what was it exactly that didn't sit all that well with me - and that's actually a complaint in it's own right because I can't remember any real positives either. It felt pretty bland and generic overall. Way too early to give up though so I remain cautiously optimistic.

It's interesting how Mirai (and Riko I imagine?) is about to become a 2nd year middle school student, that's fairly unusual for the series I think (normally the protagonists are 1st years). And yet the characters look younger than ever before, I'd totally believe you if you told me they're actually 9-10.
What's also worth noting is that Riko (and soon Mirai I bet) is an actual magician and her powers don't stem from being a Cure. Didn't really think they'd handle it this way.

If there's one thing that I'm worried about right now it's the OP/ED. As a rule of thumb in the past the quality of OP/ED was directly proprotional to how much I liked the series. And I don't like Mahou Tsukai's OP all too much. I'm pretty sure it won't really grow on me, either.
But they say an exception proves the rule so let's hope that'll be the case with Mahou Tsukai!

It's interesting that Mirai's grandma seems to know something about wizard shit. I hope that becomes important later.

We've spent a good chunk of the ep on exploring the somewhat elaborate setting. It's fairly unusual for PreCure, since the franchise is usually firmly grounded in daily life, interrupted by Monster of the Week mahou shoujo segmets. I'm all for upping the fantasy value, though. It adds something new to the series and it feels fresh compared to the tired 'contemporary Japanese middle school' setting.
I'm wondering how they'll fit Mirai into this, though. They want her to enroll in a magic (boarding?) shool in another, fantasy world. Personally I have nothing against that idea - if they were to teach magic at said school all the better, that might be pretty fun in it's own right - but it'd send a somewhat questionable message to the actual audience PreCure is meant for.

After the second ep I feel it's even more likely that we will indeed stick to 2 Cures for the entire season. I failed to notice it before but forget having a joint transformation sequence, it feels like Mirai and Riko couldn't transform independently even if they wanted to. But the throwbacks don't end there - not only is the finisher a joint attack as well, they even hold hands before firing it in the same way Honoka and Nagisa did in Futari.
I honestly no longer remember how all of this was handled in Splash Star but while I appreciate sticking to two Cures I'm not a fan of taking this approach that far. I think it's better if the Cures can transform by themselves, pose some threat by themselves and have their own finishers. I remember that Honoka/Nagisa were fairly helpless in the face of danger if the other one wasn't around and I always found it rather irritating.

The QUALITY is still strong. I didn't mention it after first ep for whatever reason but I think it got even worse last week. It's very worrying that the QUALITY is this bad so early in the series, makes you wonder what'll happen further down the road. We're not at Fresh levels yet but I guess the cool action sequences of Princess aren't coming back.

There's something that really bugs me about the way the eyes are drawn in Mahou Tsukai. I keep paying attention to it and can't shake the feeling that it's very wrong and yet I can't put my finger on it. I think they are simply too far apart from one another? Or at least that's how I feel when I'm watching the show but I doesn't really look as bad on still pictures.

Wow, that was a pretty eventful ep. Or another eventful ep should I say. Looking back on it ep 1 was ironically the least content packed episode yet.

We got a new PreCure form right off the bat. Third ep! They sure wasted no time. With that we know how the whole thing is gonna work. I like the concept because each new form comes with a new transformation sequence (and last week's was quite pretty) and with a new finisher. It doesn't add all that much to the series but it helps it stay fresh by reducing the stock footage reuse.

More importantly, pointy hats (and brooms)! キターーー(゜∀゜)ーーーー!!!!! Just looking at them brings a smile to my face. The town is magical enough, although I wish it were much smaller and that the series would focus on it some more (I don't hink it will). Just cute witches doing witch things in a country side fanatasy town.

It honestly felt that way last week for a bit. It was very easy to forget you're watching PreCure and that there'll be a Monster of the Week fight in the second half.
Also, Kobayashi Yuu out of nowhere.

It's worth noting that OST was suitably fanatsy-like as well, especially the tavern-ppoi music in the shop where they sold the brooms. I heard several new tracks in last week's ep and all of them were so good I would download the OST right now if I could. PreCure loves to recycle soundtracks but it's mostly new stuff so far I think.

The OP is starting to grow on me which is another good sign. All in all this probably won't be The Holy Grail of PreCure I was hoping for when I heard we're doing witches for the new season (and sticking to two Cures) but it's still pretty neat.

With the way they were so concerned about the destruction I would have thought it'd be permanent this time.
Oddly enough they have a good chance in this new installment to easily explain how things get fixed after battles (by using magic) but things still fix themselves afterwards...

Must say I'm very impressed by this season so far. It feels like a real departure from the standard formula so far. It's still there with the villains, but otherwise it feels very different, but in a good way. It has a bit more of an adventure vibe going for it which I appreciate a bit.

> joint transformation sequence
they could always just tack on a separate one like they did with max heart. Even in gogo when they added milky rose her transformation didn't match the others and required her own independent sequence. Suite also had a somewhat combined transformation which got other characters edited in latter.
It would be nice though if they really did leave it at two characters.

Not much has happened in ep 4 but combined with 5 there's enough to write about.

We did some more setting exposition, although it was rather generic and hardly mentionworthy. A new toy was stuffed into the series but I'm grateful we got rid of the overwhelming majority of ugly CGI that has been plaguing PreCure lately.
I guess I'm not enough of a little girl to understand the appeal of the staple toddler, too. The teddy bear was cute enough for me and who needs 2 mascots really.

More importantly, arguing is back! Finally! Hooray, what a relief and how I missed it. It's boring when the eps are nothing but 'look at us being perfect friends' all the time. Of course you're gonna fight sometimes! And then reconcile.
Mirai was insensitive, Riko was stubborn and mean but in the end they cleared everything up. Both of them were partially at fault which was a nice touch.

I wonder what'll happen with Mirai after the Spring break. Will she transfer or do they simply plan to cram in the entire season in those couple of weeks? It would be a departure from the standard seasonal PreCure way of doing things, but not one that I would particularly mind either way.

That's about it. Mahou Tsukai has a pretty unique flavor among PreCures. Unfortunately I feel its PreCure roots are what prevents it from being truly great. It's still a good show however.

>>25649

Those are nice but Riko's hairstyles are really ugly, heh. Aside from her normal, non PreCure hime cut ponytail.

I've spoken with some who are disappointed they went with a bear instead of a cat which would fit the theme better.
Letting Mirai have her bear and a cat for Riko would have been a good solution to that.

I think what prevents greatness here is lack of a stronger vision. Nothing's wrong with characters or setting except that Riko's diamond hair looks like a pokemon. Writing shows where the problems are; it sometimes doesn't fit the setting at all (think of the latest two episodes). So even though the setting and ideas are interesting, there's no point, and that separates the storytelling from the setting.

Then again, the first five episodes of a magical girl anime are usually some of the worst.

Cat sounds nice but we've done that before. I like how simple and traditional the teddy bears' design was.

>>25666
I don't think we need a real storyline, just good episodic content. ... Then again I wouldn't mind some overarching plot. Not some amazing story but something simple that could push the story forward when needed.
The real problem is that the monster of the week formula prevents the show from fully exploring and making the most out of its fantasy setting.
They've taken a step in a new, adventurous direction - which I enjoy - but they lack the courage and vision to make more out of it. Right now we're stuck halfway in - it's basically a PreCure show with pointy hats. Which is not a bad thing per se but we could do better than that.

I guess the real problem for me is that I've gotten tired of the formula. Mahou Tsukai made me fully realize it. It's been 11 seasons and over 550 episodes so it's only natural I guess. And there are next to no kids' shows besides PreCure - the remaining ones are either a constant, never ending stream of increasingly bland idol shows (Pretty Rhythm, PriPara, Aikatsu, Lilpri and Pitchi Pitch were a thing as well) or other franchises which stuck to the same premise since forever (Jewelpet).

I ended up complaining a lot but I appreciate Mahou Tsukai so far, it has what it takes to become one of the best PreCure seasons yet.

Oh, I didn't mean to say PreCure needs "real plot" instead of moster-of-the-week. It's one of the better formats imo, but there are PreCures that pulled it off better, like Smile.

Smile's theme was fairy tales, and its point was traditional values (and their value). Those fit together because fables are a method of passing down values and tradition. From the very first episode, it either showcases one of the girls (i.e., their virtues and maybe those virtues' flipsides), or some tradition they need to protect. Not all episodes were as smooth (the Osakan candy ep.), but overall they managed to introduce the theme in the personal life part, then integrate it to the fight, and then have the conclusion to problems in everyday life play out in the battle, which I think is what magical girl shows are all about. Having a theme that the conclusions fit is a big plus for Smile.

That plot format doesn't play out as beautifully in Mahou Tsukai. Eps 1 and 2 are introductory and can be forgiven for that. Third episode was by the book and the best so far. In ep 4 the instinct vs. rationality doesn't play out very strongly, and in 5 the incident was solved before the battle, making it a mere afterthought. This is the kind of storytelling weakness I'd like Mahou Tsukai to overcome, either by dropping unnecessary fights or by reading their weekly villain manuals again.

I think with the growing baby and a world to explore and Mirai's grandma there's a lot of overarching plot to look forward to, too.

>Cat sounds nice but we've done that before.
I suspect that's the only reason they didn't go with one,but suite was like what 4 years ago? Besides, they've done look alike mascots before. Slash star and the first season had nearly identical mascots (and main characters but still ) they've also done baby like mascots a few times as well I think.

>there are PreCures that pulled it off better, like Smile

Funny you'd say that since I always thought Smile was really bad at producing weekly content. The character focused eps were very cookie cutter and too limited in scope, almost isolating the starlet of the week. The fact that they were stuck one after another at 2 points in the series - instead of being spread around some more - made it look even worse.
They also did next to nothing to flesh out the relationships most of the time. This has been neglected in PreCure for a long while, which is what I meant by
>It's boring when the eps are nothing but 'look at us being perfect friends' all the time.
When I look at the past couple of seasons and I ask myself 'what's the relationship between A-ko and B-ko' the answer is almost always '... they're good friends'. It's hard to add anything besides that.
Ironically was decent in that aspect, with Nao and Akane's rivarly and Reika's and Nao's supportive friendship.
But yeah this is kinda off topic.

As far as Smile's theme is concerned I wasn't crazy about it either. Fairy Tales are a bland theme and Lilpri did the exact same thing just before Smile, which in turn made it look even more bland. Compared to some of the more thematic season - like Heartcatch's flower theme or Suite's music theme - it fell really flat.

>have the conclusion to problems in everyday life play out in the battle, which I think is what magical girl shows are all about

I disagree, and I don't really think this is what commonly happens in mahou shoujo/PreCure. The fights are usually somewhat interruptive and have little to do with the little SoL drama that happens before and after them.
Moreover resolving things with magic wouldn't be a particularly good lesson for anyone.

>>25674

That's more or less what I meant. Personally I wouldn't mind either way but I like the teddy bear.

Out of all the magical and fantastical elements in this show, I think the hardest thing to believe is that a cute little girl in an anime would have a cute teddy bear. If anime has taught me anything it's that little girls only like ugly dolls covered in scars and stitches, with large jagged teeth and an eye patch.

As is always the case with PreCure there's less and less to comment on each week. We've settled into the formula by now and what needed to be said has been said pretty much.

I've mentioned this before but I really enjoy how non-Mary Sue Riko is. Great character. Good, realistic portrayal of what it feels like to not meet your own standards and to feel inferior to an older, successful sibling. And a nice 'I'll surprass you one day' conclusion to boot.

I wish we'd explore the setting a bit more instead of just sticking to the empty school. There's nothing remotely interesting about it right now, and with the way it's presented. Maybe we'll see some cooler stuff after the makeup exams will be over - outside of school or not.

I think I misunderstood what >>25672 meant by 'have the conclusion to problems in everyday life play out in the battle'. This is actually more or less what happened in ep 6, on some level. I thought he was talking a more direct conclusion which is a no-no since solving the issues with magic doesn't teach anybody much of a lesson.
Ideally though they would've applied what they learned in the episode in the battle itself. This again is PreCure formula thwarting Mahou Tsukai's potential. If we were to alternate between eps where the villains show up and where they don't we could've had some situation where using water would've solved the issue, like a fire or something. Of course this would lead to a bit of 'solving the problems with magic' issue but not much moreso than fighting the enemies as legendary magical warriors.
From $$$ point of view this wouldn't make much of an issue. They can still flail around some toys regardless of whether they fight against enemies and it wouldn't cost that much more to animate even if they were to drop the stock footage every two weeks.

And man the series is pretty QUALITY. Fight scenes in Princess were at least well done but now that we seemingly have no money to animate them they feel like a waste.

I-I actually really like Mahou Tsukai, even if I don't sound like it usually.

So the inner stones control transformation, and the outer ones are special attacks. That makes the outer stones pretty much irrelevant, since opportunities to use them only arise after the stone has been collected. The inner stones respond to the PreCures' feelings, so they have actual storytelling potential. Then again, it seems Diamond covers intense feelings as well if Ruby has been used in the previous episode...

1) making Mofurun a real character
2) making a point of Riko not having a surname
3) that girl who notices the magic stuffs
4) the sickest transformation
5) new side characters

I have to say, in every episode, the backgrounds are amazing, and basically every design is good.

So lemme get this straight. She left for that magic world but didn't bother to ask her parents? That's a bit fucked up. Granny not really telling them anything was kinda fucked up too.
She must have been missing for weeks. Most parents would probably call the police after a day or two. After a week they'd be worried sick and doing everything they could to find their lost child. Contacting friends family media outlets etc.
Granny said she called once but it seems a bit weird to take that alone.
I imagine the conversion must have gone something like this:

Mother: "Have you seen Mirai? she hasn't come home yet and it's getting late."
granny: "she called me, it's okay."
mother: "Where is she?"
Granny: "At a school for manners."
mother: "uhh, what?
Granny: "yup, she's fine."
mother: "You mean like a boarding school? ...for manners?"
Granny: "Yeah, she's fine. Don't worry about it."
mother: "shouldn't we have been told about this?"
Granny: "It's fine don't worry about it."
mother: "How was she accept into this school without us signing off on it? and since when does she need lessons in manners? Why did she call you and not us? Where is this school anyway? Do you have a number I can call them at?"
Granny: "Cure Up! Ra-pa-pa! stop worrying about Mirai!"
mother: "What were we talking about? ...what's with the wand?"
Granny: "Don't worry about it."

No. This world has better backgrounds and school uniforms. I still get surprised by how cute Mirai is in that uniform. Too bad they can't write the interaction magic creates in this world all that well. Enough of the useless assing around, I want good characters doing good deeds.

A school uniform signals purity, purposefulness, and properness. The witch outfit is intentionally too wild. As usual, the magic kingdom is the unconscious 'otherside', so it makes sense that the uniform there is adventurous and breaks the rules of proper dressing to fulfill a multitude of fantasies. Waitress-like skirt, corset (or a corset-like vest?), puffed sleeves, cuffs that remind of Peter Pan, long black socks, Art Nouveau, bow tie, check-patterns, suspenders, you name it. Girls that age explore their possibilities between cute, sexy, and graceful, and the uniform works as metaphor for that. Some kind of "rpg practicality" is also implied by the design, suggesting some dream job thematic. Also note the colors: reddish purple, pink, and yellow. Pink for girliness, yellow for exploration. Maybe the purple-red is just a cross between red for passion and purple purple for nobility? In magic world their socks are black, and in this one they are white.

For what it is, the magic school uniform is a good design, but it decidedly does not fulfill the role of the school uniform. Conceptually it is part of the magical girl wardrobe. This is confirmed by how the magic school functions in the story; it's not very school-like.

A bit, but frankly while Magic Realm seemed like a wonderful idea the execution was pretty poor I felt. It was a missed opportunity.

I've never really saw this season with yuri goggles and always considered Mirai/Riko too young for that sort of thing and nothing more than good friends. Lately though it's hard to ignore the twin mother vibe they're giving off. Reminds me a lot of Nanoha/Fate with Vivio.

I'm still very curious what the ramifications of this age change will be for future cross over movies. Are they gonna revert back to child form at the start of every movie for some half assed reason, or go young just before they transform into the older looking precure forms each time?
