How suitable do you think Yotsuba&! is for normal people? (I intentionally didn't say 'normalfags' as I feel it's an entirely different breed.) For example, if you showed it to her, what do you think your mother's reaction would be?

I kinda want to buy the first two volumes as a present for someone and that's why I'm asking this question. I always thought that - provided the person in question is somewhat open minded and wouldn't dismiss it only because it's a 'stupid comic' - it would be a good read for just about everyone. But after rereading it I'm not so sure anymore and it's hard to put a finger on the reason. Would a normal person understand and appreciate it's charm?

On a sidenote I managed to forget how great this series is. After not having read it for a while I began to think that while it's the best cute series in the slice of life genre it's not as good as some other series with more serious approach. Well, I've been wrong. I feel like this is the best manga out there again.

I would compare liking Yotsuba to liking funny stores (or videos or whatever) of pets or small children (maybe including relatives). Yotsuba would not put people off as much as moe type stuff would, but it isn't quite for everyone.

>liking funny stores (or videos or whatever) of pets or small children

Completely agreed. Yotsuba is the equivalent of watching cute puppies do cute funny things on youtube. If someone can't enjoy that, then...

Well, I mean I can understand someone getting tired of it if they wanted something with a little more depth but outright disliking it? Come on.

Yotsuba is a perfect gift!
I've presented 1st volume of Yotsuba to my friend (25 years old girl, 100% 'normal')on this monday. She liked it.
And I also presented DVD with Azumanga twice. People liked it too. Because Yotuba and Azumanga are not 'freaking japanees cartoons", but "funny stories about funny girls'.One of them said: "Oh, I thought japanese anime was something different'
Azuma's humor is awesome, so kind and gentle. I always smile when I look at his works (both manga and anime).

Yotsubas greatness transcends anime and has universal appeal

Personally, I'd consider it the equivalent of Calvin and Hobbes.

Really? I would think that Calvin & Hobbes is several tiers above Yotsuba (in terms of subject matter, NOT quality in case anyone gets offended), mainly because the former is a lot wittier and has some political/social commentary.

That isn't to say that there aren't many strips in Calvin & Hobbes dealing with simple childhood innocence and naivety the same way Yotsuba does, but my point is that Yotsuba doesn't stray any further than being just cute and "nice" to read.

why does having social or political commentary make something better?

This is exactly the sort of confusion I wanted to avoid and even wrote:

>in terms of subject matter, NOT quality in case anyone gets offended

But I apologize, as I should've been even more specific. I meant that having social and political commentary makes the subject matter more mature (god, I feel like such a "i only play mature games for mature gamers such as myself"-fag as I type this).

I am making no judgment on how "good" something is. Both are perfectly fine and it's all a matter of tastes.

I think Azuma works are great gateways into moe.

That said, I have actually lent out copies of Yotsuba&! and Chi's Sweet Home to my parents, and they enjoyed it. I was pleasantly surprised and relieved at the same time that I wouldn't be judged again but I was wrong.
