He does it intentionally because he wants to reassert his reason for revenge and steal a bunch of experience from his rapists(he also gets it from the people he's forced to heal, so the total is more). He doesn't want to live "a better life", he just wants revenge. Putting himself in a lowly position makes Flare more disgusted by him. The mechanisms for his power and how much he remembers from his first life are kind of vague, but I don't think this is a "thinking type of anime" unfortunately.
I made this thread before watching it myself, but now I like it. It's very refreshing. Rape as a device for the main character or even side character to punish another is like the ultimate taboo in fiction as you can see from the mal reviews. Murder and torture is tooootally fine "morally" though(Higurashi). A lot of people wont accept it in any context. But here it is. Just right in front of you in animated form.
