I don't know about you guys but this was my most anticipated anime of the season.

...And it was fucking disappointing. God that Narrator gave me ear cancer. It felt so wildly inappropriate it was like they were announcing a cheesy game show not a story about a loan shark's rise to power. From what I remember the narrator in the first season of kaiji was great, the one in the second wasn't as good but was still miles above this guy. Also, if this is a prequal in which Kaiji will likely only play a minor roll, what's the point in doing a recap of the events of his story?
And man, how is half the first ep dedicated to trying to remember generic henchman's names? It's like a gag that got stretched out for ten long minutes. The introduction to the characters had me wondering if they really expected viewers to remember these characters, and when it was commented on that they all looked the same and had similar names with the same hobby it felt like a self aware joke, but jesus did they beat it to death... By the end of the first ep I was honestly starting to wonder if this wasn't meant to be a comedy or parody of the original story.

Maybe this is a metaphor for the creative process behind the anime itself?

Interesting how they went from having a committee trying pool ideas and work together and think of a clever game, to simply going with everything this guy here says.
And my interesting I mean lame.
>> No. 31577 [Edit]
They are still doing this after they ran out of ideas halfway into the last Kaiji season? Seriously I am still mad about and still want those hours of my life back I spent last season watching a man do battle with a glorified pinball machine. Pachinko will never, ever, EVER be a spectator sport.

They're so out of ideas they're animating the process of thinking up the original ideas.

Oh wow. That's... kinda sad.

I dunno I didn't think the Pachinko thing was that bad. When it aired I was really curious to see how kaiji could beat a machine. Up until then every challenge had a human element behind them and were winnable as long as he overcame that element. The Bog on the other hand seemed like an impossible challenge. He wasn't set up to play some twisted game with a convoluted win state, or fight some cheating prick who he could beat by outsmarting them. The bog was a cold soulless machine designed and programed to be unbeatable. I was disappointed he beat it by mostly sabotaging the machine, but even then it was neat how so much of that arc played out like a heist. ...so much so they might as well have just robbed a bank, but yeah...
It was clearly the start of the decline for sure but it could have been worse.

>They are still doing this after they ran out of ideas halfway into the last Kaiji season?
It's a prequel by the way, not a sequel. like >>31580 said they aren't bringing anything new to the table, it's the (boring) story of how the original rock paper scissors game was made in universe. -Why- they felt the need to explain and animate the process of a comity creating the game is anyone's guess.

I was on board with the pachinko machine arc until the sixth miracle in a row. they really should've ended that arc sooner, once the plan went out the window and they needed pure luck it should've only happened once or twice instead of the pure luckfest it ended up being.

This is basically an anime version of the office.

I started watching it yesterday and the fact that this happens before kaiji and yet still Tonegawa uses smartphone and watches movies on 4k tv bothers me more than it should.

I wonder was there ever a fan edit of the pachinko slog? It could be trimmed down into a tight 90 minute heist movie, right?

No room for a CRT so they had to do some spur of the moment time traveling.
