Rei will win by the end of Theatrical Version Evangelion. Or by the end of Evangelion in general, but judging by the wait the theatrical will be the last of the main story.

Also, having re-watched the theatrical version and the television version, I have found the theatrical to be better, even though this isn't what I thought at first.
It delves deeper into social rejection and isolation, to lengths that normal people have not experienced and therefor do not really understand.
