The mecha otaku aspect feels a bit tacked on and gives the impression it's only there to keep this anime from being too generic. So far it doesn't seem like it has that much impact on the story and the main character could have just as easily have been someone who happens to really like those mecha knights and nothing would have changed. I also can't tell if the MC is actually aware of his past life or not. He mentioned the terms "robo" and "programming", but otherwise hasn't said anything about our world or his past life. All the same the first ep was kinda fun.

The mecha design is solid, and the battle damage looks good.

and then the trap is better at everything than anyone, and invents a gunblade. I'm not expecting much from the writing.

Yeah sorry but I don't really see it, they just look like a young boy to me. There really isn't much there in terms of feminine features. The eyes aren't as stylized as they would be on a girl with long eyelashes and what not, they do have more color and detail to them than your average guy would get I admit. While the hair might be a bit long for your average boy it's not unreasonable for the setting, I saw guys with much longer styles in this anime. Their mouth also seems too large to be female, they tend to be smaller on girls in anime when not open.

It helps to compare it to the male faces. Though, as seen in the OP image, his eyes are larger than both the males and females in the series.

Just because the series hasn't yet used it as a gag doesn't mean his character design isn't a trap.

I don't think it's that unusual for a main character to stand out more and have more detail than no name side/background characters, combined with him being much younger than them, but I see your point and can understand why someone might think they're female. I suppose his friend did confuse him for a girl when they first met now that I think about it, heh.

I'm getting whiplash from how quickly they're rushing trough the story here.

In only two episodes they introduce a power hungry nation, a country that gets invaded by said nation, the main characters save that country's princess, liberate that country, join it, and help them develop new technologies and weapons to defend themselves from further attacks. They also introduce a rival for the MC, a romance subplot for a side character, and they kill off one of the main antagonists. jesus...

True, the anime adaptation is going full speed in animating things.
