Holy shit what a god damn fucking cunt. I was hopping the bear would come and smack that bitch around a bit for treating her like that. What's this bullshit about just accepting her horrible behavior? Are you fucking kidding me? You don't act like that or treat people like that, that bitch needs to be taught how to act like a half way civilized human being and treat other people with some respect. What the fuck man?!

I also didn't like how Hibiki treated Machi. It was unwarranted and unnecessary, but I guess that it needed to show that Machi is not only ignorant of the world but incapable of dealing with rough people.

I was very surprised with Natsu's maturity, though. The fact that he was so understanding and trying to explain why Hibiki is so rough was pretty cool.

I just hope that they tone it down with Machi, though. Even if Hibiki did end up buying clothes for Machi in the end (and maybe bond a little?), it was still a terrible introduction.

I don't think it's very mature to ignore problems like that and let your friends/family get bullied and abused. If it's opposing options or a different life style it's mature to say "different strokes for different folks" but we're talking about physical abuse here which really crosses the line.

Besides, how are they ignorant of the world? They knew assholes liked to pick on country folk, and I think it's a bit unfair to expect a little girl to be capable of dealing with abusive pieces of shit like that. Why do you think they give children rape whistles/alarms instead of rape swords and shields? Crying and calling for help is the best a little girl can do.
Isn't japan supposed to be really conformist and judgmental when it comes to stuff like this anyway? How is that kind of behavior considered normal and acceptable? Are ganguro type bullies a culturally accepted part of everyday life now or something?

While the being 'sheltered' thing is true, I don't want to see those things happen to Machi.I don't care if it is bullying or not, I don't want Hibiki to hit Machi at all, even as a joke.

This.
Lets be honest here. I think it's safe to assume most people watching shows like this are drawn to them by the cute girls and enjoy watching cute girls doing cute things, Not watching them get smacked around. As such it seems a bit strange to me to introduce a character half way into the series who's soul purpose seems to be acting like a nasty cunt and treating Machi like crap. Think of it this way; if you saw your own daughter being treated the way Machi was by Hibiki would you care? Would you try to do something about it or tell them to just get used to it like Natsu did?

In plenty of shows having characters act as punching bags for the rest of the cast can be amusing (even if a bit fucked up), but it feels really inappropriate here. Yes the character kind of gets poked fun of for being a country bumpkin who's ignorant about city life, but it's been 'mostly' harmless fun. Hibiki takes things a bit too far and the worst part is Machi is told to just "deal with it" while no one says a word to Hibiki about the shitty way they act. The few times they're seen getting along together feels more like a stockholm situation.

Do you think parents never hit their own children?

You must've lived a really sheltered life.

I can only imagine how safe your life must've been if this little bit of rough-housing causes you to go batshit insane.

Bit ironic to essentially say we're exaggerating about the issue and also claim we're acting "batshit insane".

No one ever said parents never hit their children. That scenario was simply a failed attempt at trying to get you to sympathize for the character, but from your response it's easy to guess what your stance on hitting children would be.
I've had abusive parents, and I assume you have to, That doesn't make it okay. If you know what that life is like why would you wish it on others or even tolerate it? Machi has done nothing wrong and doesn't deserve to be treated like that. Even if you have no empathy for others surly you must be able to see that it's an unfair situation to force someone into, they clearly don't like being pulled, pushed, slapped, grabbed, kicked, or yelled at. You might not see anything wrong with 'rough-housing' but if you cast aside your opinions and look at the mater objectively for just a moment you'd see that this is not a way many people like being treated.
The golden rule is to treat others as you'd have them treat you, but in this case the platinum rule of treating people as they'd like to be treated seems much more appropriate.

It's not out of the question that trolls developed an anime around the concept of building up a girl to be the ultra-cutest for the first 6 episodes and then abusing her for the rest of the show.
>> No. 26346 [Edit]
>>26341
I don't know how it's ironic, you're blowing it up because you're insane.
Your views on the world are abnormal.

>That scenario was simply a failed attempt at trying to get you to sympathize for the character
No, it really isn't. The writer, the editor, the publisher, the animators, the director, they all obviously had no problems with it because it isn't a big fucking deal like you're saying.
The scene itself isn't serious at fucking all, it wasn't mean to be, it isn't.

>The golden rule is to treat others as you'd have them treat you
How do you know she could not tolerate a little pain?
If she was so concerned about her physical well-being she probably would not ride a motorcycle.

What people want and what they get is different.
People get what they deserve; the strong prey upon the weak.
If you're weak you deserve pain for being weak, it is not how I believe the world should be, it is how the world is.
C'est la vie.

>No, it really isn't.
...I guess you do need it spelled out after all.
I was referring to the scenario I created in the post you responded to involving the hypothetical situation in which you 'hypothetically' have a child who is 'hypothetically' being bullied.

>How do you know she could not tolerate a little pain?

>>26129
however unlike you, i found natsu's response to the situation EXTREMELY frustrating. lets be honest here, natsu is the vicarious stand in for the male audience (us) and through him, we get to experience machi. when he saw the brutal way machi was being treated, his response was "oh hey, thats not nice... but its no big deal".... what the fuck!!? natsu should have been fucking pissed and slapped that bitch's shit for treating machi that way!

honestly, this episode made me question whether or not to even continue with the show.

>>26263

i get your point of view, and understand why you would see our reaction to this incident as being over the top. in and of itself, the "violence" in this episode is nothing to write home about and really isnt all that bad. the issue is that it clashes strongly with the ethos of the show, and feels like an attack on the sensibilities of the viewer. that is why this incident is so offensive.
>> No. 26410 [Edit]
>>26408
>natsu should have been fucking pissed
This is what I find to be the strangest part of this whole issue. His response feels very out of character for him. He is literally shown growing up hand in hand with machi from childhood at the start of every episode. As blatantly as possible they illustrates a very clear and strong bond between these two characters. A recurring theme is also Natsu's unwillingness to let machi explore city life and worrying about what might happen to her there. This shows that he at least has some protective instinct and concern for her well being. So when he finds her dirty scuffed up and crying for him to help her while a pissed off looking delinquent looms over her, it's nothing short of bizarre that he would approach the situation with such indifference, even more so that he'd tell Machi to just 'get over it'. We're talking about a freakin BEAR here after all, Hibiki is lucky she didn't end up like leonardo dicaprio.
>> No. 26413 [Edit]
>>26410

i agree completely; his lack luster response to this incident subverts his standing as someone who loves and looks out for machi and undermines his credibility as her protector. considering the lengths the show goes to reinforce natsu's position as machi's guardian, this scene really weakened him as a character.

I'm not sure how I feel about that ending. Was that really for the best? Giving up on city life like that? I keep forgetting to reply to this thread.
This would have been a very forgettable anime if not for the unorthodox ending. Normally anime tries to drive the 'you must always face your problem and never run away' line like a mantra - without ever bothering to explain why exactly that's a good idea - so just letting the character take the easy way out feel fresh.
I Machi's idea this won't result in anything good most likely, I can tell by my own example.

>Was that really for the best? Giving up on city life like that? Seemed like getting out of the boonies was a big deal to her, so is it really okay to give up on her hopes and dreams? After all, the stuff that made her decide to give up on city life was all in her head.
I don't think so. It was her dream after all. I could understand a girl paralysed from the waist, down due to an unfortunate accident, giving up on any sports or dance-related dreams but Miko's reasons for abandoning her dreams were purely of a psychological nature and that's why her failure feels unsatisfactory to me.
I feel that if Yoshio had been a bit more considerate of Miko and the nature of her transition, it could've worked. The episode where she was selling samples was tough for her but I considered that to be a good push beyond her comfort zone. Pushing her into becoming an idol, however? That had predictable results. It was far too much, far too soon. I feel like if Yoshio had just been a bit more understanding and patient and pushed Miko through a more gradual transition, Miko could've matured into someone capable of doing the things Yoshio desired but instead, Yoshio, blinded by his own ambition (albeit a selfless one), proceeds to push Miko too far, ultimately destroying the little will she had.
Also, if you pay attention to the 4-komas at the end of the final four episodes, you'll realise that this is what she's like after the mind-break. She's always hungry and she has that dead look in her eyes. I believe deep down, she still wants that dream. The desire's there. It's just that her will was crushed.

>>26525
>Machi's complex got the best of her and all of the strain from trying so hard to fight it left her tramatised.
I disagree. I think she tried to do (or rather, was pushed into doing) too much at once.

>>26584
How has your life changed since this anime finished airing?

I know this anime is a year old but I dropped it halfway through episode 9. There was very little humour in the later episodes so it just got too boring for me. I heard the final episode had some backlash however so I finally came around to watching it. I know it's selfish but I'd like to revive this thread and discuss this show if possible. I'm upset and I don't know what to do with these feelings.

>I disagree. I think she tried to do (or rather, was pushed into doing) too much at once.

It was because she was forced into doing too much that her complex ended up breaking her up.
