Not half bad, but I wouldn't say it's as great as some people make it out to be.
It's a bit paint by numbers. Clumsy inexperienced main character with great potential. someone well known and respected in the field being there for the mc to look up to and maybe saves the mc while giving them encouragement to try harder. It's been done many times before, but it's at least well executed.

So far it seems like the creators were tried to do the best they could with the material they had available. With the exception of the 3dcg bits the quality and direction and everything is pretty good over all. My only real gripe with this series is how little so many things make sense. I wont comment on the enemies since that may get explained in more detail latter. what confuses me is pretty much everything else about how this world works. I don't know if I should even bother pointing out all the stuff that doesn't make any sense since this really seems like the type of anime you're not meant to think to much about. That said, I still find it hard to get past the bizarre and extremely impractical battle attire. Some of the outfits in this series look like the sort of thing a gundamn fan who can't afford a real costume would build from junk around the house. Or at best like they were designed by a seven year old. Some are better than others sure, but Jesus there are some that are so silly and ridiculous looking it's almost laughable.

yes, it's so much of a strike witches clone it's not even funny. Little girls living in a military base who suit up with mecha parts based on older era war machines to fight off aliens out in the ocean while using magic, some of which even use fighter planes. In strike witches each character is based off old war heroes, in KanColle they're based off old war ships. Even the art style and direction is really similar.

fanservice isn't nearly as good as strike witches in my opinion but it's just been one ep so far. If you're looking for girls who get a bit beat up and have their cloths torn and tattered then it seems they'll have plenty to offer in that area.

I've been warned about CG and I kinda expected it to look ass because of that but it was decent enough CG so it didn't bother me that much.

Overall the first ep was pretty decent. I expected it to be utter shit though so maybe my judgment is off simply because it exceeded my expectations. And as someone who has never played the game I'm surprised by just how many girls are there, damn, it's like two dozens.
The ship parts looked kinda goofy and it bothers me that they just stand on water as they 'sail' forwards, I wish they would go for some ice skating animation instead (which wouldn't really make sense but it'd hurt my brain less). I love how the arrows turn into planes, though, that's kinda creative.

This post ended up being all over the place but the point is I liked the first ep and I'm kinda looking forward to ep 2.

Man... Im saddened because they could be doing so much more with this. Would be neat if they integrate some history with their characters/personality. Work into the storyline real historical events that happened that would get people really into it. There would be so much real world history here that would make it oh so enjoyable to watch. If its just going to be about the little girls running around I am going to be dissapointed.

On a side note: When I started getting into Kancolle back half a year ago I started developing a liking to Nagato not realizing that was one of the ships I wreck dived with my father back in the late 90's.

Around the point the instant repair bucket showed up I took a pause to process what I was watching... then I suddenly found myself laughing like an idiot. I guess you could say that's when it hit me that this is gonna be one of 'those' shows.
The complete lack of logic practicality or anything that remotely makes any sense. This series is aiming for the full retarded angle and it's become so clear to me now. Clearly the moronic looking battle attire is meant to be a satire on mecha musume style designs.
The only question that remains is why not bump up the fan service and complete the package? They have a lot of potential in that bath house 'dock' but seems like they're trying to avoid showing too much for some reason.

while watching the second ep I noticed some of the characters sounded... pretty damn similar. So I looked it up and one VA (who is playing shimakaze, also played cocoa from gochiusa) is playing as a bunch of other side characters.

The creators of this anime seem as if they forgot what type of anime they were making by the time they got up to ep 3. The concept of this anime is completely ridiculous and this is reflected by ridiculous character designs. It's meant to be fun and silly and not meant to be taken seriously. Tonally speaking this show went full retarded.

That said, I went into this ep after hearing the fuss people have been trowing lately (yet avoid specific spoilers). I gotta say, people sure are over reacting. It's not like they went full guro or anything, they didn't even mess up her hair like she was worried about. It's like >>21929 said, she'll show up again latter as an enemy for sure to create some drama where they don't wanna fight her but have to and so on and so forth. It was pretty obvious though, I mean it's a new character they just introduced that ep and I don't believe they're in the op. Only thing sad is that I knew she was the one who was gonna get it the second she showed up, the rest of the ep just reinforced that. Kinda lazy directing really, It'd only be a shocker if it was a character that's actually been around since the first ep. How hard would it have been to have introduced her a ep or two ago and let people get a bit attached?
See, with stuff aired on tv you run the risk of people just having started watching that from that ep on or having missed previous eps, creators know this so when they're gonna give a character the axe they shove in as much characterization in that ep as they can to try and make watchers care when that character dies (Fucked if I know why they still do this in the age of DVRs
), problem with this is anyone who's seen their fair share of tv can recognize this. Even then this character wasn't even in this shown before this ep. They both introduce the character and dumped their life story, then pseudo killed them off in the same 20 minutes, wtf?
tldr, I was more bothered by the lazy directing than the (possible) killing off generic cute girl #634

All that bs about balance in ep2 had me really cranking up. They make girls wear things like this and expect them to be able to skate around on the water with perfect balance?

ep4 felt way more ubeat and wacky than it should have been considering what happened in that last ep. save for the very end of course. It's almost like they're busting out the most popular characters just to keep people from dropping the show.

Fuck the battle ships, fuck the war, fuck everything in this show. Why don't these two have their own anime?!

Regardless, unmanned aircraft IRL still need someone to control them on the ground and If akagi can control all those planes during practice, why not during combat as well? Would this mean the carriers can pick and choose when she sends them out with pilots? I suppose I could buy the idea of it taking up all their concentration and leaving them immobilized while they do it, which is why they give them pilots so they can concentrate on other things, but that still doesn't seem like a stretch when we're talking about a whole squadron of planes.

I'm not sure if I've just gotten used to it, but I think they cut back a bit on the 3dcg in the 12th ep.

At least Taihou showed up.

This was a surprisingly good show. I expected it to be utter shit but it turned out rather well. Somewhat surprisingly most characters do seem to have a personality of sorts that goes beyond the realm of a silly gimmick. They were pretty likeable, too. Kinda lackluster finale with no real sense of closure but they already knew they're gonna make more so maybe they didn't have to force themselves to wrap things up. Will watch S2.

I'm surprised how little screentime Shimakaze got, if she weren't in the OP I would've forgotten she existed. She didn't even appear in the final battle and everybody and their mom was there. I wonder why, I thought she's pretty popular.

Regarding the Kisaragi matter... I have very mixed feelings about this. Overall I kinda wish it didn't happen because it doesn't really fit the overall mood of the show but at the same time Abyssals ARE sunken ships. Regardless of whether Kisaragi would've gotten sunk or not the series would still be about those ship girls fighting their zombie fallen comrades. In a way discovering a method to restore Abyssals just because of Kisaragi would've felt wrong as well. It'd just mean Fleet Girls kept killing their own kind for no reason. There was no real good way to solve this, the very setting is at fault. Just another proof that cute girls and wars is a questionable combination I guess. I feel bad for all the people who are Kisaragi fans, though.

They went all-out with MutsuxNagato in the last ep.

What a turd that was. Up until the end they still don't make it clear why exactly they're fighting those things and what they are for that matter. maybe next season? probably not... least they remembered to give them audio this time.

Good thing I expected shit from this anime, otherwise I might have been disappointed. From being a strike witches wannabe, having a paper thin plot, and those attempts at tragedy were so out of place in an anime with such a ridiculous premise. This show was really all over the place and lacked any sort of focus. Even the yuri bits felt really out of place at times, like in ep ten when things take a bit more serious tone and they cut to the lezbos yelling at the moon for no reason. I get the impression the guys behind this anime couldn't decide what direction to go with it so they just tried shoving in a bit of everything. Of course there's also the laughable way they cast the same va for like ten different parts. Budget problems much? lol.

I'm guessing this fate/history reaping itself thing has something to do with the fact that every single ship in this anime has sunk by now IRL? Obviously they're not gonna want to kill all their characters off, but then why even take things in that direction in the first place then? It's like they start down the path of historically accuracy but then chicken out and decide to go with fighting fate.. Problem with that is that means this is set in a universe where those events have happened, ie the future? If this is earth then where are the ships from other countries? What about normal people? I don't think they've shown a single none ship human in this whole anime. The world of this anime seems really barren and lifeless when you think about it.
It's because of this I feel like this anime should have picked a direction and just stuck with it. Being lighthearted silly fun would have made it easy to overlook all the stuff that doesn't make much sense. They could have alternatively gone with something more dramatic and tragic with a good flushed out story. Instead they go for both and neither. Hard to see the anime as fun and wacky (like it tried to be for a few ep) when they kill off a character early on and introduce the possibility of death. Like wises it's hard to take this show too seriously when the cast is full of boat girls and they never bother to offer any explanation about that, or what they're fighting and why.

I'm not entirely convinced this admiral of theirs really even exists. I wouldn't be suppressed if it turned out to be like something from psycho and the admiral was just a mannequin in an admiral uniform, and maybe they take turns wearing it while playing pretend. That would explain why Kongou jumps on the wrong person sometimes. Maybe Ooyodo is the one who usually plays the admiral and that's why Kongou got confused.

If it weren't for these two I would have dropped the show long ago. I just wish they went a bit further with their relationship. In the end Kitakami realizing she needs Ooi out in the field, but that should have already been obvious.
