3241 No. 3241 [Edit]
I'm moving out soon and am thinking about getting a dakimakura. The problem is, I don't even know where to begin.

The official dakimakura of my waifu has been virtually impossible to find for a long time now so I'm giving up on that. Instead, I have a fairly high res image that I'd like to use. Have any of you custom ordered before? As for prices, I've seen the case alone range from like $20 to $100+. What are good places to buy from? What's a reasonable price for a quality case? I don't mind buying the case and pillow from separate places if it means saving money.

Also, feel free to share pictures if you have a dakimakura of your waifu.

And no, Miku is not my waifu

there are at least a dozen different sellers on ebay that do custom pillow covers with any image you send them, prices are about $30-$40.
they're pretty easy to find there.

Personalty, that's what I'm gonna do, but before that, I need the image in the first place.
There are no dakimakura of my waifu, and I've thought of paying an artist to draw an image for me I could use on one, although someone told me of one a month or so back, it's kind of embracing for me to approach someone I don't know about drawing something like that..
I'd also want it done a particular way, and it would be to uncomfortable I think to talk to them about that...

Same, i have never found a good Yuki Nagato dakimakura, so i'm in the process of vectoring and blowing up a dakimakura-style image of her to 150x50cm.
>> No. 3248 [Edit]
That was gonna be one of the first things I do when I move out. I found out that raide in the KS IRC does commissions for dakis, and I was gonna request one as soon as I felt up to the task of typing up that e-mail. I was sorta hoping that weee would do it instead of Raide, since Raide is Lilly's official artist, and weee is Hanako's official artist, but then again Raide has drawn Hanako before and is a pretty good artist, so it's not that big of a deal.
>> No. 3251 [Edit]
I plan to get one when I move out, but that's still a couple years off, and beyond that, I'm in the same boat as the OP.

OP, I wish you the best of luck in this.

I haven't used a custom order with my own image yet so I'm not exactly sure how the quality of those will turn out. However, I have ordered a number of dakimakuras. From my experience http://janelee922.ecrater.com/c/766230/dakimakura-hugging-pillow-case
has been very good in overall quality and I've seen well over 10 dakimakuras from them (between me and friends and such) and I haven't really been disappointed with the quality from any of them (actually I've been rather surprised at how crisp some of the images came out considering they are reprints I was expecting slightly less crisp lines). They also have an option to upgrade to the two way tricot fabric which is what is normally used in the official covers now-a-days. Otherwise it's a polyester fabric called peach skin which I find sufficiently smooth.

Anyways I wish I could be more helpful as far as how custom covers would work out but I've had the good fortune of having a waifu that's relatively easy to get good merchandise for. I'm looking forward to seeing what a true custom one looks like, I might even have to get a custom one of Adult Nanoha to go with adult Fate since I really don't like any of the ones they have.

Anyways best of luck to you guys, I have to say getting a dakimakura of Fate has changed my life and is probably one of the best decisions I ever made.

Also pic is mai waifu with our family.

I'm his buddy and now roommate. This is an image I took in my old basement once I'd collected some merch. I've really enjoyed my Louise dakimakura ever since he convinced me that it was ok to truly be involved in a 2D romance. I have now 2 of the cover that appears on the wall so I can sleep with 1 and display the other.

I've also collected many other Kugimiya Tsundere covers, with 3 of Shana, 1 each of Aria, Nagi, and Taiga, with a Lotte cover coming and Rose next on the list. I also have 3 more Louise covers and a Haruhi cover coming in my current order from Janelee, and I also own a cover of Mio from MM.

Because Louise is my waifu, I do sometimes feel bad cuddling with anime girls other than Louise, but these things are way too addicting. If anyone wants I can post images of my other covers too.

Oh wow, the custom image I planned on using is actually on that site. I might have to check out that site more when the time comes for me to purchase. Thanks for the recommendation.

That being said, would you mind elaborating on how getting a dakimakura "was one of the best decisions you ever made"? I want one but those still seem like pretty lofty words.

Also, I think it's pretty crazy that you and >>3257 have so many of these things. Even if I go through with getting one (which I want to do but feel pretty embarrassed about it) I'm going to try and hide it except for when I'm sleeping at night. Unfortunately these are usually the kind of things you need to do in this world.

As far as one of the best decisions I've ever made, it's because I used to have sleeping problems and really bad anxiety attacks that would keep me up for days at a time. Ever since I got my first one of Fate (the satin one on the edge of the rest next to the Fate plushy) I have had remarkably better nights sleep and she literally just pulls my anxiety away. The only problem is that I feel like it is really hard for me to sleep with out one now (emotional and physically I'm really attached).

I used to be really embarrassed about having one but I got over it pretty quickly because my parents still woke me up in the mornings and I had to confront them about it pretty early on. Since then it hasn't been a major issue and I really don't care if people know I have them or not, and I've learned that a lot more people are understanding or accepting about it then you'd think (that and a lot of people are able to just ignore it or not care about it as well).

Pic is all the ones we own together to date. One of our other friends coined the term "cuddle puddle" for our bed, and I feel it fits perfectly.

I guess I should say he was the first to point out that the term fit the situation rather than coined it. Forgot that cuddle puddle was often used in the rave scene.

Anyways another ebay seller I've had a lot of luck with has been
http://stores.ebay.com/shemues-anime-store?_trksid=p4340.l2563

I've found a lot of stuff from his place that I hadn't seen other places (I actually got my Rose cover from him because he was the only place so far that I've seen one).

And if you want something more smooth compared to peach skin and/or don't want to splurge on tricot, this guy uses satin instead. Which is really smooth and nice. This is actually where my first Fate cover came from, as well as my Nanoha, Vivio, Hayate, Minato, and the other guys first Louise and Shana.

The covers themselves, however, are packaged in a sealed plastic pouch and folded around a square piece of cardboard.

Pretty discreet overall, especially since the packaging the use is used for a lot of other things anyways, and it's most likely not going to be a target for customs offices because it's extremely hard to reseal and I'm sure people would get mad if they opened it, didn't properly reseal it, and the contents ended up missing or damaged.

I usually just buy pillows from Bed Bath and Beyond They are a little short (like ~13 CM short) but work pretty well. But I found another body pillow I've had for a while that I'm not sure why I never thought about using that fits perfectly but I don't remember where I got it (The pillow itself is brown and soft and I thought putting a cover on it would be a waste, boy was I wrong).

My friend got a pillow with his official Shana cover that was made to fit with the cover but he's been using it with one of his Louise's and it seems to work out pretty well. From what I've heard from other people the cospa ones that are 150x50 are pretty mediocre and aren't very good as far as like consistency and stuff goes, but I haven't personally tried it yet. I think I'll start buying different pillows in the future until I find one I'm really happy with and upgrade all my covers into those while slowly rotating out my older ones (the ones from BBB are 3-4 years old and it's getting really annoying fluffing them all the time, though I do like how they are a bit more deflated and easy to hug).
>> No. 3299 [Edit]
>>3298
I went to Bed Bath and Beyond for one per a /a/ recomendacion, and as you said they were to short, but also, they had unsightly patch work, and they were far to round I think, like a tube.
>> No. 3304 [Edit]
>>3299
They were pretty round but they deflated pretty quickly, but I aggressively cuddled and hugged my pillows for them to get to the point they are at now, my friend's are still pretty round and offer a lot of resistance because he's always very gentle with them. The patchwork isn't noticeable when the covers are on them, so that's never really been an issue to me. But like I said I'm probably gonna start looking for better pillows, especially for Fate, because it's one of the few things I think I can give to her that she deserves.

For folks having trouble finding a proper pillow, my suggestion is to head to the store and buy 4 regular pillows of whatever softness you want. Take a pair of scissors and carefully cut open 1 side of the pillows and GENTLY pull out the stuffing. The polyester or whatever it is is in folded layers, so carefully unfold it into about the shape of your dakimakura, and lay 3 pillows worth on top of each other. Gently push the stuffing into your dakimakura, and you'll have the best fitting dakimakura imaginable. Depending on the pillows you bought and your dakimakura, you might need a bit of extra stuffing from the 4th pillow to fill it out.

You have to be careful when removing the stuffing from your purchased pillows or you'll end up with a lumpy mess, but its really easy. The only issue with this is you have to unstuff your dakimakura to wash it, but I've got 12 dakimakura set up like this and I've never had an issue with it.

On an unrelated note, does anyone have any advice on how to properly upsample a picture to use for a custom dakimakura? I've got an image that's only 680x920. I've messed around with resizing and sharpening but it's still too blurry for my tastes, and the amount of detail in the image makes me think vectoring it would be next to impossible.

There are a few programs out there that can help a little for lowering image noise/artifacts, but they can't work magic.
http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/noisegrainreducers/Noise_Grain_and_Artifact_Reduction_Software_.htm
You'll still need to do a lot of redrawing and manual cleaning.

what's the image by the way?

I tried a dakimakura sized pocket that I crafted out of the discarded pillow shells, but the inside pillow would move around and the fit wasn't as tight. It's really nice having a tight fit and a fully stuffed dakimakura.

I had an idea for how to make a custom dakimakura.

Use 3D Custom Girl to render your waifu wearing pajamas or whatnot, save a screenshot, then use that to vector.

The only problem I see with this is the amount of time it would take. 3D Custom Girl has an insane number of mods, and vectoring takes quite some time.

Am I overlooking something? Is this a dumb idea?

>Is this a dumb idea?

Not at all, no. Just: if your waifu is already a full 3D Custom Girl add-on (to speak about something really accurate), it is likely that she's popular enough to have official or doujin dakimakura HQ designs available at some booru or Minitokyo, for you to use directly.

It's times like this that I wish I'd asserted my anime-watching hobbies earlier, now I have to slowly start putting posters up of manga and figures to verrry slowly introduce to them that I like this sort of crap.

If I went all out and got a daki without them knowing I even watch those, "Chinese cartoons", I'd probably be taken to a psychiatrist, especially given the culture of my backwater town.

No, hobby heart is all bootleg. Peach skin fabric and price lower than 80 dollars usually mean bootleg/chinese(and thus lower quality, Though there are chine basid dakimakura artists),.additionally hobby heart is known to be bootleg.

Ebay auctions are bootleg sometimes.

I don't know about good places custom ones, but though there is no official one of Miku as far as I know, there are quite a few of her out there including at least a few I'm supposing you haven't seen.

Though if you have to resort to bootleg hobbyheart is the best and decent quality.

>As far as I know dakemakura isn't custom.
It's just a image printed onto a pillow cover, how can it not be possible to make custom dakemakura.

I honestly don't care at all if it's bootleg or not, the official things are way over priced.

Places that do prints are all well and good and all, but it doesn't mean anything if you don't have a image to start with.
Do any of these sites offer services to draw images to be used?
I see people say sometimes you need to find and talk to a artiest about it, but if I was good at socializing, I wouldn't be getting something like this done in the first place.

>It's just a image printed onto a pillow cover, how can it not be possible to make custom dakemakura.

dakemakura is a website
dakimakura are the pillows
"Custom" dakimakura, in this case I mean are ones that can be ones with an images you select, non official ones are ones made by artists, and official ones are made by or endorsed by the company.

It's even in their q&a!
>Q Please tell me the differences between DAKIMAKURA and DAKEMAKURA.
>A We put our soul in to DAKIMAKURA, becoming DAKEMAKURA.

Those don't offer services for artists to draw pillows exactly, but you can find a high resolution image there and make a custom one yourself. There may be sites that do let you commission artists for it, but I'm not sure what they are, and most of the custom ones I've heard of people getting were from images commissioned by artists(or found on the internet) then sent to printers to get a cover done.

Interestingly enough that was the cover, along with one of Kagami, for a small pillow being sold at c78. Though that may be small you can vector it, though I'm afraid I can't help you with that.

My mistake, the words are so similar...

>and most of the custom ones I've heard of people getting were from images commissioned by artists(or found on the internet) then sent to printers to get a cover done
uhh, yeah, I think I said something around those lines...
and like I tried saying, I have no idea how to find these artists or get in contact with them, which is the problem.
and there are no dakimakura images of my waifu, and never will be unless I pay someone to make one.

Thanks! I'll give vectoring it a try.

Here's a dakimakura-sized image of my waifu that http://pimmy.deviantart.com/ did for me some time ago. I haven't sent it to anyone for the putting on a dakimakura cover yet. When I do, I will probably go with Jane Lee from Ebay. She seems reliable and worth using.

Pimmy might be up for making custom images of waifus for a dakimakura.

There is also this guy who did a daki image commission once. He might do another for commission: http://raide.deviantart.com/

Okay, scratch what I said a few months ago - I want to get one.

I'm planning on using HobbyHeart, but I'm unsure of a few things.

What material should I get it in? I was thinking of the "2 Way Tricot" one, mostly for how it "resists wrinkles", but how hard are they to hand-wash? Do I just throw it in a sink, give it a good scrub, leave it to dry, and that's it? If not the tricot, I'd probably go for the peach skin. And what one would give the most durability? I wouldn't want it fading on me, or fraying after a wash or two.

http://www.hobbyheart.com/dakimakura-150x50cm-hugging-body-pillow-inner-stuff-p-476.html are these things any good? I wouldn't want to cut up a load of smaller pillows to pad it out (as I'd mess up somewhere), and there isn't a Bed Bath and Beyond or similar store anywhere near me, like someone else suggested to get one from.

And I'm guessing I don't want to pay the extra money for EMS, so I don't risk getting ludicrous customs charges, just for a faster delivery.

Thanks.

This should answer most of your questions. There's also a thread on /fig/ for dakimakura where similar questions were asked.

I believe peach skin is the most durable; I've heard 2 way tricot is on the unnecessary side of things unless you want it particularly. As for the pillow, you can just search for a body pillow that has the necessary dimensions on, say, eBay. The most important thing is the size of the pillow.

Yeah, I'm thinking of probably the peach-skin -other people have complained that 2-way tricot catches on things, and isn't very durable- but it's polyester, isn't it? The polyester I have for comparison (Satin) feels plasticy and... squeaky. Maybe it's just because it's not "peached", but how soft is it actually? I've seen it asked elsewhere, but no answer.

The peach skin? As the name implies, it feels similar to peach skin. I don't know personally, just going by what I've read, though. So imagine the feeling of a peach and apply it to a pillow. Never seen someone complain about "squeaky-ness", rather only read good things about it. If I were to get a dakimakura, peach skin is the material I'd choose since it's durable. What good is a pillow if you're afraid to use it?

I don't know if peachskin polyester for dakimakura gets some different type of finish or something, but I recently acquired a peach skin polyester cover for my mattress and it definitely doesn't feel peachy at all.
I find it's way smoother and less plastic-ishy than the pieces of polyester satin I found around here to compare, but it definitely feels very synthetic, then 'peach skin' becomes a quite misleading term to describe it.

Peach Skin is ok, but it is not soft and does not feel like peach. I like that it gets warmer when holding it so it feels kind of like skin after some time. 2-Way is softer and stretchy, but it does not feel that much like skin. My 2-Way dakimakura seems bigger than the peach skin one, although it is from the same producer. The picture looks better on the 2-Way cover in my opinion. Never washed them, don't know about that. I would prefer Janelee922.ecrater.com over hobbyeart, the stitching is better.

(Can't edit) And there was a fingerprint on the hobbyheart cover.

Can anyone upload, or refer me to an image of a peach-skin polyester dakimakura? Sorry to be a nuisance, but I'm probably going to get a polyester one, but I just want to have an idea of how the material will look. Google didn't really help, and neither did the other threads or archives I've found.

Thanks, but I got too impatient waiting and I ordered it on Thursday. It's a polyester one, though! I tried Janelee for the one I wanted, but the only one on there was a little too lewd for me, as I'm tame enough to find lewdness of my waifu disgusting. So I ended up going with HobbyHeart. I'm interested in what it looks like, now, though, so give me a picture!

Will post pics and parents' reactions when it gets here.

It got here (as I refreshed this page, funnily enough). Didn't go so well, though.
First thing that happened was my mother charged in through the door holding it, shouting at me to open it. I tried to explain that it's a pillow. She then started opening it. I told her not to and took it from her, then she called me nasty for denying her the privilege of opening it.

Damn. She doesn't even know that it's got a picture of a Chinese cartoon character on it and she's already wrecking the house.

I think I'll hide it until tomorrow, then invite a waifu-having friend over to open it with, so it doesn't seem so weird, and I don't seem so lonely.

I don't think it helped that I've left a picture of a normal-looking-guy holding a daki on my monitor a few times, now, to get my mother used to the idea. I think she knows!

So many regrets, so far.

Pic related.

That won't stop her.

She didn't want to open it for any malicious reasons, or because she was concerned about what I had bought - she was just curious. She prioritizes her curiosity over everything else.

Opening mail not addressed to you is a federal offense that carries big punishment.

That said, my mother has never asked me to open things in front of her or opened things addressed to me. At least I can give her that much.

But I have hinted to her that "some people who know the difference between real and imaginary, have love for 2D characters in serious mature-audience oriented animations" and showed her photos of pretty girls from different serious anime (Eva, Madoka etc). She told me it was... Well, I won't quote her, but it was some terrible shit. This from a person who thinks ghost hauntings are real.

If you have a waifu, your parents may laugh. If I admit I have a waifu, my mother will send me to a mental institution(I am certain if I explain my case, they will understand I am fully mentally sound (except for having a few memory issues and anger issues)) while my father... Well, he found out the other day (how?) that I crossdressed and posed for photos with a NicoNico Douga head on, and called me just to bitch at me for twenty minutes to "norm the fuck up and don't do that sort of shit.", so if I told him, I would have to do it as I drive by him.

This might seem a bit rude, but weren't Eva and Madoka aimed at kids? At least Eva was.

I've told my dad that some people online have anime girlfriends and he's made jokes with me about dakimakura after he saw them on some TV show. I think he has somewhat of an idea that I'm an otaku. He joked about buying me a dakimakura for my birthday and I told him it'd be a great present as a joke.

Eva was aimed at youth/young adults. Madoka...hard to say. I don't think it was aimed at any particular demographic. It was filled to the top with empty philosophy and literary references, but they didn't try to have as much meaning as Eva.

My mom hasn't said anything about my dakimakura, but she got once scared when she helped me with moving "I thought someone was sleeping in your bed!". I quess she doesn't understand what it is for. She probably thinks it as some sort decoration or just used like normal pillow.

Where you guys have bought your pillow fillings? I need quality pillow, price doesn't matter if it is good. I have two so far and both of them don't feel right. First one was too small for and cover was loose. Second one had not enough stuff inside so it felt kinda airy or empty. I made slight modifications by adding some normal pillow fillings inside of it, but it still feels bit off.

Working on getting a dakimakura of her. I currently have commission paid for with an artist who specializes in drawing her. The only problem is that he tends to draw things slightly on the lewd side, so I've been careful to direct him towards a slightly more modest one than the one he had in mind (although I do want it to be sexy). I paid $88 for both sides, and I'm just waiting on him to finish it so that I can get it onto an actual pillow case. I already have a body pillow that I've used for months now.

My mother's been okay with the daki so far, and we've joked about it, but my father's been very awkward. He's not spoken about it, but every time he's in my room he won't stop looking at it. He's also been more aggressive in his voice to me. I guess he thinks I'm a faggot loser, but oh well.

As for the actual daki, the polyester one seems to have been a good choice. It feels very cold at first, but it soon warms up, and once it is warm, it feels... like... very very soft leather. It definitely doesn't feel "peachy", but I'm not disappointed with the material, and I had high expectations.

The print seems good quality, and the zip on the bottom couldn't be better. The only complaint is that it's not quite 150CM. It is, but once you put the pillow in it it thickens out, and reduces the height down to about 140CM. That would be fine, but I'm like 2 meters tall, and mai waifu's print is very small in comparison to others, so she's practically a loli compared to me.

The pillow (which I got from HobbyHeart) is very flat and doesn't fill the daki out entirely. They used a third-party in my country to make it, so unless you live in the same country as me, I doubt you'd get the same one. I might steal some other pillows and fill it up with them.

It's very comfortable to sleep with

I've considered getting a Dakimakura, but in order to get one that isn't lewd I would have to commission one, and I don't exactly have the money for that right now. Though it will be really nice to finally sleep with Stocking.

I'd like to commission a daki of Cynthia, but I've been having bad luck with that... I would love to have the art style be like Ken Sugimori's. But, the only artists that I know of that can mimic styles(or his specifically) are either too busy or just don't do commissions.
