Why aren't you watching the strongest budget-starved show since Aku no Hana yet?

Aku no Hana had a petty damn big budget from what I gather, though.
>> No. 17481 [Edit]

Yeah, it was big, but it wasn't big enough to produce animation without a lot of cheap-looking scenes - hence the term budget-starved (insufficient budget to look consistently good), as opposed to low budget (no money whatsoever).

The photos are taken without sunlight whereas in the show the sun is shining in almost every shot, so the difference is somewhat overstated. The anime does have pastel colors and super brightness but the difference isn't THAT great if the lighting conditions were equivalent.

Haha, poor Natsumi. That's one of those things you're better of never thinking about.

Ep 3 was rather disappointing, major stepdown compared to first two eps. I hear ep 4 will adapt ch 17 from the manga and it's considered one of the best chapters so far so I'm optimistic about next week.

But man this show really reminds me that back in the day tons of studios blew their budgets on the OPs since they knew they'd be using those for like half a year. Nowadays most OPs are Non Non Biyori-tier (so basically slideshows).

I like the next ep previews, creative way to do those.

That's a terribly weak willed and backwards parenting strategy.
It's almost as bad as giving the child ritalin or some similar medication for the sin of acting as expected of a child.

Anything wrong with the child can be beaten out of them with due time and a diligent and stern arm.
If the child isn't humbly prostrating itself before you in apology for doing something they damn well knew they shouldn't do, as well as having a damn good reason for doing so, you have failed as a parent.

>>18074
>oh for sure! but does this include things out of their control?
Of course not. I'm talking about the obvious things that the child clearly knows they will get in trouble for, but do it anyway. For example, the friend, whose parents ingrained into her enough sense to realize when you should shut up or else. That was good parenting. komai and her little sister, on the other hand, really could use more discipline (though if they learned common sense, a large portion of the humor for the show would be lost).

I just think it was strange Suguru won that trip and the opening scene made it look like he was uninterested by how he gave it to Natsumi and her friends. Sure you gotta have Renge's sister as a chaperone, but then Suguru ends up going too anyways, and the seldom seen Hikage, and even the candy store lady for some reason.
>> No. 20442 [Edit]
>>20172

I guess 4 of them went for 'free' using that prize and the rest paid for all of their expenses.

More importantly I felt like almost all the voices were slightly off and this barely ever happens to me. Renge used to be a tad deeper and lower pitched, Dagashiya was definitely noticeably higher pitched, Kazuho (Renge's sister) used to draw out her sentences a bit more, Hotaru... was hard to put a finger on; she improved after a couple of lines and it didn't bother me afterwards.

Weird, I never really experience anything like this. Maybe one character sounding off somewhere but the rest sounds fine usually. Maybe I started to pay too much attention to it after I felt Renge-chon sounded off. Or maybe it's simply just me misremembering the voices to begin with.
>> No. 20449 [Edit]
>>20442
>the rest paid for all of their expenses.
That seems like a fair assumption, but they don't seem like they could afford those extra tickets. People in the area seemed like they're barely getting by. Like, I can't imagine the candy shop owner has the kind of money laying around to go on vacations when the town has something like 5 kids.
>> No. 20460 [Edit]
>>20449

>People in the area seemed like they're barely getting by.

Well, that's kinda questionable for most characters. Hotaru's family seems really well off. Renge's family owns a huge mountain so I doubt they are poor. Koshigayas felt about average but since it's their brother who won the prize maybe all of them went for free.

Dagashiya on the other hand is a mystery worthy of a novel. Just how she manages to keep herself fed to begin with is unfathomable.
>> No. 20471 [Edit]
>>20460
I don't think those kind of prizes work like that. I think it's a set number of people and it doesn't matter if it's friends or family.

>Renge's family owns a huge mountain so I doubt they are poor
Unless that mountain is filled with gold I don't see how it would have much impact on their financial situation. Owning large amounts of practically worthless land doesn't mean someone is well off. A random mountain in the middle of nowhere probably wouldn't be an easy sale either.

I didn't mean 'poor' as if they're needing to beg people for money. I simply meant people in that town seem like they have just enough to get by but not much for anything extravagant or fancy like a vacation. ...with the exception of Hotaru's family of course.

With how commercialy successful S1 has been I kinda expected S2 to have better production values. Instead I got QUALITY in the opening. You know, the part of the show where studios like to blow the budget.

In other news I didn't fully realize it's a prequel ep until the very las second, when they showed Hotaru moving into her new home. I managed to somehow rationalize every other element that should've made me realize what's what - it's been a while.

I don't think anyone would or could blame you for not noticing, this show isn't exactly known for it's twisting and turning plot after all.
It took me a few minutes to realize that myself. At first I could have sworn Renge already had a randoseru in S1, also thought the uniform pass down thing was odd too. Then noticed Hotaru was nowhere to be seen the whole time. Honestly it was all very subtle.

Bit weird that even ep2 took place around the start of season 1. It's not like everyone died at the end of season 1, why back track like this? The show doesin't even really have a plot what's the point?
I guess it was nice that they were able to add some insight into the relationship between Hotaru Komari, but even that doesn't seem to warrant the backtracking. For all intents and purposes this ep could have taken place after season 1 and nothing would have changed at all.

This is why I'm very disappointed with S2 so far. There's no continuity. It feels very disjointed and chaotic. I spend too much time trying to figure out when the events are supposed to take place instead of shutting my brain off and just enjoying nothing happening.

I hope we'll actually get back to 'present time' at some point. Right now this feels much more like BD special omakes than proper new eps.

I think this scene might've been an answer to that question.
I didn't realize it before but Hikage has the same eyes as Renge. Kazuho can't open hers, either. Guess it runs in the family.

Weird, I could have sworn Candyshop was an adult. This makes it seem like she's actually in her mid teens at best.

Because I'm waiting for the BDs. I know this show is worth watching, so I want to do it properly instead of suffering through the agonising wait for weekly TV rips.

Normally I wait for BDs myself but SoLs aren't really something I'd actually want to marathon.

Was this girl around before that flash back segment? I honestly don't remember her but now it seems like we're supposed to believe she's always been there?

She was. She appears in S1 as well. She's just not a regular.

Eh, when you don't see their parents once over the course of 22 eps (while parents of other characters do actually appear in the show), see their daughter place 2 rices of bowl on the altar etc. I think it's pretty much an educated guess to assume they're gone. But yeah, I was wrong.

>Eh, when you don't see their parents

So what, you don't have to see their parents to know they're alive.

I'm pretty sure that Hikage and Nee-nee talked about them multiple times throughout the series (they're working in the fields, they're coming late tonight etc.)
