[Edit]
In my book, slice of life is just a chuck of ordinary people's every day life. In some cases it can be hard to differentiate between sol and comedy, but I think one could just get away with calling it both if it's so hard to pick.
but I guess if you can't have it both ways and need it to be one or the other, I'd say simply go with what the focus of the show is on.
In Azumanga Daioh, would you say they focus more on comedy, or the daily lives of the characters? I for one would lean to comedy
and as far as I'm concerned, if it has any magic scifi or supernatural elements to it, it's automatically disqualified as a slice of life, unless they're already established things in the world and part of every day life, for example, aria, I'd call that a slice of life, and it takes place on mars! but I wouldn't call something like Kamichu a slice of life becuase becuase that actually has some remnants of a plot, I mean, how can you call something a slice of life when one of the characters learns to become a god, and in one episode even helps protect a alien from the military? but sure enough, that gets listed as SoL.
oh, and no I don't think of Cannon, or Rocket phone Atari, as slice of life at all.
