I think people don't know what "slice of life" means. I just was looking around various sites and saw Bakemonogatari listed as SoL one place and Kanon on another. I guess these people whould probably list Samurai Champloo as SoL because "its a shows about how traveling ronin lived back in the day".
IM was SoL.
Minami-ke was SoL
High school romance shows aren't SoL, they're romances.

Ichigo Mashimaro isn't a SoL? What is it then? Can something not be both a comedy and a SoL?

if it has a plot, it's not sol

I'd classify Ichigo Marshmellow as a comedy, not a slice of life, but then again I'm not sure why someone would be angry by how other people organzie their anime. Also, Sora no Woto was not a slice of life.

or if something 'happens'

Things can happen, it's just that they are usually resolved in an episode or two.

Difference between comedy and SoL:
Azumanga Daioh: Comedy
>> No. 11793 [Edit]
Azumanga was slice.
The Yasujiro Ozu homage at the end should have tipped you off.

Not the guy you're replying to but the mnaga was definitely comedy. Never cared about the anime so I don't have anything to say about that.
>> No. 11802 [Edit]
Nope, it's comedy.

i suppose the term "mono no aware" means nothing to you.

He said Ichigo Mashimaro is slice of life, dude. And it is. It can be comedic and also be slice of life, of course; something doesn't have to be completely uneventful for it to be considered slice.

To consider Azumanga Daioh slice of life, I think you'd also have to call shows like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei or Nichijou slice of life, which are all shows I think of as more of just comedy. Honestly, I'd call them all comedy/slice of life, though, just like I'd call Kino no Tabi adventure/slice of life or Natsume Yuujinchou fantasy/slice of life.

But Kanon and Bakemonogatari are certainly not slice of life, if you ask me.

Mono no aware isn't same as slice of life, so I have no clue what your point is.
>> No. 11899 [Edit]
In my book, slice of life is just a chuck of ordinary people's every day life. In some cases it can be hard to differentiate between sol and comedy, but I think one could just get away with calling it both if it's so hard to pick.
but I guess if you can't have it both ways and need it to be one or the other, I'd say simply go with what the focus of the show is on.
In Azumanga Daioh, would you say they focus more on comedy, or the daily lives of the characters? I for one would lean to comedy

and as far as I'm concerned, if it has any magic scifi or supernatural elements to it, it's automatically disqualified as a slice of life, unless they're already established things in the world and part of every day life, for example, aria, I'd call that a slice of life, and it takes place on mars! but I wouldn't call something like Kamichu a slice of life becuase becuase that actually has some remnants of a plot, I mean, how can you call something a slice of life when one of the characters learns to become a god, and in one episode even helps protect a alien from the military? but sure enough, that gets listed as SoL.
oh, and no I don't think of Cannon, or Rocket phone Atari, as slice of life at all.

For those who think that Azumanga is slice of life or slice of life/comedy: is The Simpsons slice of life/comedy, or just comedy?

Sub-genres exist.
